A lot of people did, actually. It's a common answer when I ask what people's "first yuri" was (in many cases, it's the only one they've seen). It's funny because Strawberry Panic pokes fun at all sorts of yuri tropes from its time (all-girls schools, "prince" on a horse, older messed-up scheming lesbians, best friend with unrequited feeling for the MC, etc.), so people who are new to the genre wouldn't appreciate it.
I actually found it OK. It's just always easy to hate the one anime that everyone associates with a genre, especially when you don't think it's all that great.
