As someone who has been out of the game for a couple years, it just all looks the same to me, with exceptions. When you're knee-deep into it, it's easier to distinguish all the subtly different designs. They don't just look like "anime." I can subdivide them into different categories like the style of the studio (say KyoAni) or the character designer (like the ToLoveRu guy). I can still do that with shows I know, but the newer shows, none of which I have watched, all kind of mesh into the same style. From this perspective I can kinda understand where a lot of the nostalgiafags come from.
