When you consider the ballet and fairy tale themes of the show talking animals are not out of place. But the situation is meant to appear strange to the audience, characters even comment on it later and it is explained in full before the end of the series.
Yes it's worth your time. Personally I love it all but the series really hits its stride when all four main characters are fully introduced.
