The way I see it that comedy doesn't suffer from archaic structure as long as the content itself isn't recycled too much, but when you move to serious storytelling it's way harder to be entertaining if you don't play around with the structure and conventions of the genre.

Even the comparable comedy-to-shounen-action series like Negima managed to have its USP of cashing in on Harry Potter and having a very large cast from the outset.
