It's a solid show compared to the average anime, and yeah, the romance parts will become more pronounced. It was trolled to hell when it aired and thus a lot of /a/nons still repeat pretty baseless meme criticism, or they just have shit taste, whatever. Some are probably genuinely butthurt it wasn't the usual light-hearted moe show and instead went to a lot darker places.

The problem with Kyoukai no Kanata is that the actual plot doesn't actually pick up until after the idol episode. Everything after that is great, and the movie is excellent as well.
