Well Toriyama is allowed to retcon himself if he changes the manga. Vegeta's power level against Recoome was over 30,000, the Cell games were on May 26 and Uub rode on Kintoun. All canon is manga by Toriyama but not all manga by Toriyama has to be canon.

It is explicitly stated that Potara fusing is more powerful than dance fusing. The Elder Kai even makes some snide remark about the dance fusion being a bad imitation.
Any two characters fused with Potara would have a huge advantage over the same two characters fused by the technique, and that isn't even taking into consideration the time limit.
