Key scenes were cut, like Saki and Satoru admitting they love each other instead of just randomly getting together in the epilogue, and in general Saki wasn't as hopeful and determined as she was in the novel. The ending was very underwhelming as a result. Shitposters will say it's because of the gay episode, but that was hardly a blip on the radar back when it aired and anyone who hadn't slept through the show knew exactly why it was happening.

It's probably not so much what it was, but what it wasn't that hurt it. It wasn't shounen or moe, so it just wasn't going to sell that well.
