Anyway once you get past the fact that Gon-san is wearing short shorts and a crop top, it's very easy to take seriously (considering it's basically a suicide attempt and a massacre). That anon is absolutely spot on with OP's flaws, and HxH is the exact opposite of those flaws in that the arcs are very varied and unpredictable. It just depends on the individual whether or not the formulaic nature of OP is a problem in the first place, some might say if it ain't broke don't fix it. But others might get bored as fuck, and HxH will probably appeal to them.

It's basically One Piece if Oda were a lazy piece of shit writer who didn't understand how to tell a story. The character interactions can be kinda fun, but it's still hard to call it "good".
I'd encourage you to watch it and decide for yourself, though. Worst case scenario, you waste a few hours.

People who make this kind of argument always try to boil things down to a bare bones outline. This is a form of straw man, as the "why" and "how" of a situation are not non-entities.
One Piece might follow a predictable "arrive on island, there are bad people, Zoro cuts some fuckers, Luffy heemz the big bad", but unlike Fairy Tail, where things tend to happen undramatically in a mess of asspulls and nakama power, One Piece follows a fairly logical progression and loves throwing in some twists and turns along the way. Oda clearly doesn't believe that emotional yelling and friendship = automatic good drama. You need world building, you need tragedy (even if it happens in a flashback), you need characters who are hopeless, and you need a personal history that ties into the character's ethics. You can't just have bad guys with an evil plan who get thwarted by the good guys before anything really bad happens.
Even when Fairy Tail lays the groundwork for good drama (they rarely do), they squander it, hard. For example, during the Edolas arc, Fairy Tail tried its hardest to make you forget the real ethical issues of an entire planet losing its primary source of energy and the fact that this was a battle for survival, instead trying to turn it into black and white bullshit by showing luxuries that they could do without.

Agreed. One Piece is decent at what it does and most of it's current problems seems to come from overcomplicating it rather than anything- it's actually a pretty standard issue problem with popular stories where the author becomes a bigshot.
Dressrosa was a jumbled mess more due to trying to carry far too many stories at once than anything.
Harry Potter is a pretty simple example, where the books exploded into massive tomes after book 3 once Rowling got big enough that she could kinda bowl over her editor and include way more than was needed, actually hurting the writing. Likewise, it seems that Oda is starting to hit a similar point with trying to do too much and it hurting his work.

Your entire argument is basically that One Piece is better than Fairy Tail (true), that doesn't mean calling it predictable is a strawman. It's a fair and legit complaint. Without fail, I lose interest during the middle stretch of an arc because I know the strawhat fights are just fillers until Luffy escapes from whatever is trapping him to beat the boss and save the town. I feel nothing for tragic backstories now because so many characters have one. There's minimal tension because people so rarely die and the filler fights have no lasting impact on the plot, it just gets really boring.
Oda is really good at some things but he needs to change it up. At this point I mostly like it for the comedy, and it isn't really that funny.

I haven't seen Brotherhood yet but FMA itself is damn impressive and the story, themes and characters are all developed with events taking sudden turns without being asspulls at all, and without the black-and-white tunnel vision or powerlevel faggotry that most shounen have. FMA is the best, and I would gladly rewatch it if I had time and not a backlog as huge as the Himalaya.
