People in Japan consume a ton of Western literature, so much so that any work (particularly the Classics) popular enough to be translated into other languages and discussed in other countries almost certainly has a sizable Japanese readership. If you have Donald Keene's translation of No Longer Human, his introduction goes into how deeply entrenched Western literature (and other things) is in Japan.

Even if something like All Quiet on the Western Front actually does have enough fans in Japan so that adapting it wouldn't be a waste of money, though, I doubt many of those people watch anime. The medium's not exactly held in high regard.

Let's go to 2ch's book and juvenile boards, shall we?

In Juvenile there's Harry Potter, classic western sf (Verne, Wells, Poe), Little House on The Prairie, Moomin, Futari wa Lottie's original book (the name isn't there but I know it's based on a western book), Anne series (and other Montgomery works really), Kemono no Souja Erin (and other Nahoko Uehashi books), and Swallows and Amazons

In books, there's Marcel Proust, Anton Chekkov, Spain and Portugal literature general thread, Tale of Genji, and William S. Burroughs,.
>>
>>134381481
I heard that Japs read more than other countries around the world but I never knew that they read so much foreign stuff. All this is translated to Japanese right? Or are there people who go out of their way to learn a language to read the original material?
>>
>>134381481
Pretty cool

>>134381565
My guess is largely translated
>>
>>134381565
I think most of them are translated but there are intelligent souls that manage to read them in English, to the point of clarifying the original's meaning if they ever get lost in translation. Seen it done in Anne threads.

And there are even blogs teaching English by translating sentences of English novels and explaining the translation. I've seen it done with Anne also.
>>
>>134381565
I find the relation between Japan and the rest of the world way too interesting.

Both ways have some few people that can speak the other language and the whole community would be entirely lost if it weren't for these.
The language barrier sure is strong to both sides.

And now I'm reminded of that one Dickens thread where folks are fapping to Esther, the female protagonist of Bleak House. Probably a joke but you never know.

It's amazing how she feels sorta like a Jane Austen heroine, complete with unwanted admirers. Dickens knew he couldn't use his usual pure and innocent heroine type since it's written in first person from her perspective. Too humorless that way.

And God the yuri vibe between her and her BFF Ada is strong. The way she keeps praising her beauty and calling her "My love" and "My pet", it wouldn't fly if it were written in the 21st century.

Wonder if the way Montgomery often mentions Japan in her works, to the point that an unnamed Japanese prince makes an appearance in Emily and falls in love with her. The whole clan panics, thinking Emily will want to become a Japanese princess which actually may fit her, since she has that traditional Yamato Nadeshiko raven black hair

It's really fucking bizarre, but hey she made a Russian princess randomly appeared in one of her other works too. Gets into a fight with the protag, who thinks she's just an upstart Yankee. I'd like to think she's a reference to that classic Russian children's literature with a hot-blooded Russian princess. Used to be popular to the point that girls want to imitate her hairstyle.

If they don't want their kids to be disabled too, then no. Imagine you were born retarded, deaf, blind, etc. Would you be happy being born in this world, disadvantaged compared to everyone else, leading a life of a lower quality against your will? People with genetic disabilities shouldn't breed because it brings forth a new generation that will suffer because of their parent's choices. It's simply moral to not breed.

Well not exactly, I'd profess myself to be both a bookfag and an animefag but I don't put solid definitions on my imagination like 3D and 2D, what I imagine is rather more fluid.

Even before I got into anime I didn't imagine characters in books as "3D" people. It was more like an abstract painting in my head(Not as pretentious as it sounds, just neither one nor the other simply fluid).
>>

Agreed 100%.

Fucking children that can't think for themselves piss me off. "It's bad because I heard Hitler did it back in my High School history class, and Hitler is the most evilest person ever!"

Fucking tards.

Also, hating on Hitler is practically a real life meme now. People don't know jack shit about him, they just hate him anyways because they've seen WWII movies.

I mean, sure he was bad news, but worse than Stalin? No way, and we don't ever hear shit about how Communism is the devil because Stalin did it, because the US simply never fought Stalin. That simple. Meanwhile I've literally got a Communist party in the student government at my University.

People don't arbitrarily hate that shit even though it tons and tons of people were subjugated and put in Gulags and shit. And they shouldn't, it was just a neutral concept that was fucked over by an asshat in charge, same with eugenics.

Being disabled and not breeding to prevent passing on the gene is one thing, but what truly scares me is that my children or future generations will be born with a disability I didn't have due to some fucked up recessive gene that only surfaces once every 10 generations.

Gene Therapy will probably be a thing in 20-25 years.

Genetic Selection is slowly becoming a thing now (They can screen eggs/sperm for defects and shit.), it's just gonna be really expensive for a while.

You can get the fetus checked out to see if it's fucked up, and get an abortion if it is and try again.

You could also do the old fashioned solution, just disowning the fucker, though this is where shit starts to get prohibitively amoral. It'd probably be best for you and your spouse to get real comfortable with the concept of abortion if you don't have a lot of money.

>>134385798
Duh. But the fact of the matter is people are still much more tolerant of communism simply because we haven't turned anyone into a meme dark overlord for people to arbitrarily shit on.

And I don't even give a shit about that, I was using Communism as an example that people believe whatever is fed to them, I don't actually even remotely give a shit about it as an economic system.

stalin = communism = evil is a logical fallacy.

It will be just like Romeo's Blue Skies, complete with the yaoi.

But really, I'm reading Little Dorrit right now and I think I want that the most to be a WMT. It's such a nice analysis on the snobbery of high-class society. Dickens managed to make the tired and cliche "arrogant nobles" trope work. The Japs could learn a thing or two from him.

Oh, those naive fools. They don't know that Montgomery's humor can get quite dark and mean-spirited if she wants it. Anne is one of the most light-hearted of her works.

That's all well and good, as long as the parents are willing to bear sole responsibility for it.

Why should everyone else have to pay taxes in order to support people that are 100% guaranteed burden with no hope?

I can understand paying for blind/paraplegics/deaf people, because they still have functioning brains and therefore have something to offer.

But when someone is a born potato with zero value, things start getting ridiculous.

while i realize now you were probably talking about people with mental illness, the biggest problem with your logic is the belief that you can assign any real "value" to people beyond economic output, and that economic output is the only qualifier of worth. if arts can bring people happiness, which gives them "worth," if someone's child who is developmentally handicapped brings them happiness as well, i don't think anyone has any right to have a say in it.

It was sad, but I wasn't shocked or anything.
Seeing a man getting shot is another thing though.

Really? In Japan?

What kind of modern day war and terrorism do they have there? If she gets triggered by IS stuff on the news then she is just overly sensitive.
>>
>>134388493
Yeah, there you go. It's ISIS shit. She's thinking globally.

Speaking of that, what happened to those two Japs that got captured by them?

Pretty sure they killed at least one of them, dunno about the other one. Probably still in captivity in case they want to make another video addressing Japan.

What's the fucking point of that?

They will fuck it up, I know it. All they can draw are harems, high schools and sometimes gritty protagonist shit and that's all.

Let them stick to their waifus since they cannot portray PTSD accurately.
>>
>>134388777
If they wouldn't show us how serious they are on a daily basis, all one could do is laugh at how they practically play the "me vs the world"-game of an edgy teen. They declared war on almost every fucking country in this world (including Canada for fucks sake) and are even going against all the other Islamist terror groups.

Kerry's character is a PTSD manchild. The arc that shows you his childhood and how he grew up basically is screaming THIS GUY HAS PTSD. Dude needs a psychiatrist. His son isn't much better off but ufotable really dropped the ball with the UBW anime.
>>

Shirou's PTSD was dealt with very nicely without getting too wordy. They did a good job.
F/SN will never work out properly in an animated format without long, drawn out monologues a la Eva 25 and 26.

>>

I'm pretty sure some anime has shown things up to that level.
>>
>>134380166
If they would adapt it, perhaps they could add their own original anime story by expanding on the book. It could tell the story about the war nurses, since some of Anne's daughters volunteer for that position. Or maybe portray the incident where Walter got gifted white feathers by the womenfolk in his college, a sign of cowardice for he didn't want to sign up for war.

Really, WW1 is like a new era. Everything is changing. Women go into work milking cows wearing overalls because the men weren't there. Gone are the Victorian women decency values since everyone is busy with the war. No time for petty village rivalries like in the previous Anne books. They all have a common enemy, the Huns.
>>
>>134404708
Hah, maybe we need WW3 just so both sides of the political spectrum will shut up.

If watching loli stormtroopers sweeping through trenches, plugging French corpslolis, and bludgeoning Brit gaurdslolis to death with a shovel after their broomhandle jams is edgy I don't want to be straight edge.

One of many ideas I had in my head was a typical harem stuck in an island where the protag has lots of sex with girls that undoubtedly want him. After a few months, being the only guy on the island and with dwindling food resources, he goes fucking nuts and cannibalizes the girls, assuming they don't eat him first.
