Watched Railgun first myself as well, except I did not even know that Index existed, and looking back, I almost wish I never did.
Watching Index completely ruined Touma's character for me. When I first saw him in railgun he was super mysterious and powerful, and I remember nicknaming him the "Mysterious Mr. Awesome" in my head lol. When you see him from this perspective, you almost get why Misaka would take a liking to him: "the strong guy who shows up to save the girl". If that and a few encounters is all you had to go on Misaka could easily end up with an idealized view of him, like I did calling him Mr. Awesome.
Then of course came the disappointment watching index, seeing him as just the usual loser harem guy, seeing him constantly being thrown into excessive fanservice, and giving silly speeches, until there was not an inch of respect for him left in me.
Additionally index seemed to throw in way too many characters, while Rail seemed more focused. The magic arcs I wanted to skip, but railgun and great op's carried me through.

Sure they were anon, book of law and ice boats were great arcs. I'd argue the opposite, there's quite a few meh or bad volumes in OT, but in NT only NT2, 3 and 11 have been all that bad, everything else has been pretty good.
This series would've been god tier if they focused entirely on science + academy city's dark side.
Mikoto becoming a part of the underworld would have been neat to see. We never really see how #1, #2, and #4 got to where they were.
