there are changes here and there from the movie, not all necessarily better, just drawn out more. So I'm pretty indifferent to the whole thing.
The RoF portion has been MUCH better than the BoG portion, though I'm still on the fence, mainly because RoF had way better fight choreography.
Though in terms of story, the Super is handling RoF much better, Goten and Trunks feeling the ki and heading into battle makes sense.

Not at all. The surprise attack I don't have any real problems with and I actually thought it was a great twist compared to the movie.

I don't know, I'd be on board with the idea of throwing away the concept of consistency in power if it actually meant that the other characters got to do anything other than getting slapped around.
The problem is that the series itself already went well out of the way of trying to set up this kind of consistency years ago, and just tossing it out. Freeza was actually the strongest in the universe, and there aren't any more space adventures because he's dead and now Super Saiyan's exist, meaning there's no credible threat out there
Cell was created in a lab on earth, based on all of the strongest characters in the series
Buu was sealed away years ago, hidden underground.
None of these characters come from the same area or background. just to avoid that "but wait, there's another guy!"
This series has had years and upon years of building up power that we have several forms of what used to be a saiyan legend just because C needs to be as powerful as C or more powerful than B. Even with the actual power level numbers dropped, we get an idea of who is stronger than who just by whatever form they've taken on.
To show how serious the androids are, we have Trunks show up and literally cut Freeza into pieces.
Piccolo goes to fuse to Kami and takes on 17, while 18 had just finished breaking Vegeta's arm a few days ago.
It's not okay if we're okay with throwing it out to have a character show up just so the B-Team do the ol' ye jobbing routine again, and then bring up those powerlevels again to explain why we can't have anyone in the jobber squad do anything other than slap mooks around, and settle for them being in slice of life scenes.

One of the things they first mentioned about DBZ Super is that they were going to try to give Vegeta more focus and have him doing less jobbing, even though. he's probably had more fights and victories than the main character of the series. People complained about him being the number two guy, well it's a pretty comfortable position for the most part, and outside of the movies, if he's getting beaten up, nobody else really stands a chance anyway, and even with those movies those are less than more.
The only fight that "mattered" that Goku won by himself was in DBZ against Freeza. Goku was hardly any more effective than him, even in the Buu Saga.
But now that Vegeta is safely out of that zone, now the idea is that everyone else just has to settle for the ol' rotuine of getting punched in the face by villains, and to be glad that the series is even giving them any time in a slice of life scene. I'm sure people wouldn't be happy if Vegeta's only other moments of him cooking eggs was him getting blasted by Freeza again.

Gohan getting beaten up isn't something alien to this series. Outside of the rare occasion of him powering up every now and then to challenge X foe, it took up until Cell for Gohan to come out the victor in a fight that actually mattered.
He got his neck broken by Recoome, you don't see people bitching about that.They already established that not even Vegeta could stand up to him, we knew he was going to lose, but it made for half-decent dramatic tension of him trying anyway. Gohan vs Vegeta is one of my favorite fights in the series, even though against an injured Vegeta, he didn't stand a chance. Vegeta was going to finish him off until Krillin threw the Spirit Bomb at him.
He gets blasted by Fat Buu so hard that everyone thought he was fucking dead.
Gohan and loss aren't strangers.
I mean, I wasn't happy wih Gohan losing to Super Buu, but it at least acknowledges the idea that Buu using what little brain power he has to get the upperhand, even if it's just to extend the series for a bit longer.. If you want to talk about a "clever loss", then there you go.
The problem is that Gohan already made his transition from kind-of-useful support into a fighter in his own right, and now specifically because they don't know else what to do with him, it's back to the bus with the jobber squad. This is literally what GT was doing to everyone else, but somehow this is special and different, and if you don't like it, you're just a fan of the big mary sue Gohan.
