Having a T420 with 1600x900 resolution now, I started downloading 1080p releases. Looks pretty great. Have to re-download some shit in my collection. (Encode-time upscaling beats playback-time upscaling; correct me if I'm wrong.)

I'm also using mpv now, and applied "format=colorlevels=full" to fix Funimation colors, but using the HorribleSubs Noragami S1E01 as an example, it doesn't seem to change anything. Did Funi fix their colors at last, or how are things nowadays?

I'm obviously too lazy to search the web and download ten different releases and make screenshot comparisons for an hour when someone hopefully already knows.

What is the problem with ffmpeg/mpv? I'm a programmer but not a multimedia expert, so please tell me.

Mpv is a better video player than shitty Mpc

Mpv automatically fixes those colours, as a few season ago HS fixed the problem. Try it with something recent

Use google next time you fucking faggot

>(Encode-time upscaling beats playback-time upscaling; correct me if I'm wrong.)

This is theoretically true, but in practice legal players tend to use pretty poor scaling algorithms, allowing playback solutions to beat them.

However, if you're downloading FUNi rips, you should still go with 1080p, as FUNi uses poor scaling algorithms for downscaling. Relevant comparison:

http://diff.pics/delIo1okgxzB/1

(Generally speaking, all legal services get their footage pre-upscaled to 1080p, and then they scale down to other resolutions from there.)

Anyway, HorribleSubs started applying a fix to their FUNi rips a while back so that the streams get recognized as fullrange by media players, which fixes the oversaturation issue on playback. So the issue's been "fixed" on rip level.

With all that said, FUNi's subtitles are still technically disgusting and I would recommend avoiding direct FUNi rips if at all possible.

Oh wow thanks Daiz.
Do you mind if I don't insult you?

I think I'll tolerate the hardsubs and possibly bad translation of Funi subs (they're at least done by professionals, no?) since I don't care enough to look/wait for another release or so. I won't die if I watch my Chinese cartoons with a slightly sub-optimal setup.

I haven't exactly counted them, but from what I've seen FUNi seems to have the highest amount of exceptionally bad simulcast translations (eg. this season they have Shomin Sample and Hidan no Aria AA).

The reason for this is most likely that their translator wages are as bad as Crunchyroll's, except they have way less ex-fansubbers on their payroll - and they're basically the only type of people both willing and capable to put out decent scripts for such low prices.

>>134120109
>>134120131
Well yeah, they're doing it for a living, no?
"Professional" means you're doing something as you profession/occupation.

>>134120189
I see, that's a shame.

If anyone knows where to get better releases then please tell, but on nyaa the only up-to-date alternative seems to be DameDesuYo with their 720p releases. Given Noragami is mostly dumb fun for me, I think I prefer the higher video quality.

>I think I prefer the higher video quality.

Bigger resolution is no guarantee of better quality.

Practically speaking, video resolution gives you an upper bound on potential quality, but the actual quality is more determined by things like source quality, bitrate and encoding settings.

Picture related - even if the quality looked like this, it would still be 1080p video. Would you rather watch this or a 720p video that didn't look like ass? Obviously, you'd choose the latter.

Oh a daiz thread.
Since it's December already, do you think the time for hevc main10 is still 2016, or you're postponing it?
I am hardware ready, but I have the feeling yuv420p10 will still be the lion in 2016.

Pls respond
