I guess it's aged well because, quite simply, it wasn't shit to begin with. Most of the anime's that have "aged badly" so to speak were never that great in the first place and were just well-liked because people were caught up in the hype of the current season at the time.
Visually speaking it has aged like shit, but it's actually a relatively well-told story and uses lots of popular tropes without butchering/meme-ifying them

No. What made Code Geass so awesome was the perfect, and I mean PERFECT balance between world-building and characters. Not many shows can do both at the same time without overshadowing the other. Gundam is usually all world-building and very little characters, as well as some fantasy anime while everything else is just character drama.

I watched for the first time last month I thought it aged damn well. I'm guessing the "le glorious trainwreck" meme adds a touch of bias for those who watched as it aired, more so if they watched with /a/.
Thematically CG touches on some interesting shit. Political intrigue, the concept of loyalty, nationalism, etc. made for a much more enjoyable watch than most anime so I have a hard time understanding why people pick on it so much. It's by know means bad, though season 2 lowers my opinion of the series quit a bit. They couldn't help but play into the "oh so wacky" nature of the first season.

It was an accidental gem. Look at shit like Valvrave and Aldnoah, they tried to do the same shit and it just became a laughing stock for /a/ to ridicule every episode.
Code Geass somehow did it right. That's not to say there weren't weak points (Mao, C's world) but the story was entertaining enough, the characters memorable enough, and Lelouch being charismatic enough that people just didn't care. Not to mention one of the best endings in all of anime (which people still debate over today)
Code Geass isn't perfect, but what it did right, it knocked out of the park.

The difference with Valverave was that the production time was litterally making shit up as they go, and they really had no end plan. Code Geass is unusual as it was one of the few Sunrise Originals that was written with its ending already planned out, so the characters all had to lead to that ending no matter what. That kepts the craziness consistwent and directional. Valverave ended up being directionless.
