TTGL is the definition of entry level. Its slightly above average, accessible, and has a main male character that pretty much anyone can relate to.
It doesn't do anything amazing (in fact, plenty of series has done the things has done what TTGL did but better) but the fact that its so accessible and easy to understand appeals to even the most casual of watchers.

Monogatari is one example of a veteran level anime. I can think of a few others, LOGH is for people who really who like anime enough to sit through a fuckton of episodes. A lot of normal people probably get recommendations from their friends, and drop right away just because they have not watched a more accessible anime before.
