Characters are the means through which the plot progresses, so I think they kind of set the bar for quality. The setting can be practically anything as long as it fits the plot.

I value the setting more than anything. Why? It dictates everything that will happen in the story. It's also a good reason to stick around unlike the other two options. Setting allows the viewer to explore the world and see aspects that may appeal to them and are something to look forward to. Character is only noticed if the viewer even cares. Most viewers don't care too deeply about a character so that is going to be thrown the fuck out of the window. Character is a great reason to stick around but ain't no fucker sticking around purely for character. You must be an insane mother fucker to do that. Plot may be a reason to stick around. It's either the same scenarios or it may be a surprise of being different therefore plot is a valuable. It's just if it was a typical get to the big boss and defeat him. That's plot and I doubt people would really want to watch an anime for that. They would either have to be really into that kind of plot or they're just deluding themselves. I'm going to bitch about LNs, because the majority of LNs used as source material are shit when it comes to fantasy. And I have a feeling more and more anime are going to be based off of LNs in the future.
The setting doesn't mean shit. LN writers will slap whatever fucking setting sounds cool into their work, and that's as far as it ever goes.
Characters are important, but one of best things I ever read was the distinction between:
--> Writing characters for the world you created
--> Building a world around your characters
Most LNs have generic characters that could fit in ANY world, and I'm sure anyone here who as watched any fantasy anime in the last few years, knows how much it makes the story suck.
You could argue that the characters ARE actually built for the world they're in because:
--> The characters powers/abilities tie into their society.
--> The world was changed by some event that caused...a magical fucking academy to be built where-
But I say that doesn't apply when the world is never explored. The characters and the world are based on a gimmick that only serves to get you reading. Everything else is secondary bullshit that's used to fill time.
And lastly I think that the plot should serve the universe it takes place in. The reason why I think world building is so important in fantasy... is because, isn't that the point? Isn't fantasy fun because of how a fantasy world works? Shouldn't the plot let you as a reader/viewer experience what makes THAT particular world interesting/exciting/whatever?

- Male protagnist
- The world is actually an MMO, not a real fantasy world. Failing this, however, the world should be explained in game terms (leveling up, Dragon Quest references, things of that nature)
- Protagonist used to be a NEET/Hikki in his past life but died and got reincarnated, or is just trapped in the MMO world
- Harem
- Protagonist is the best at everything and is the leader

Yeah I just looked up RoyalRoad. I had an idea for a story:Taking place 20 years after the defeat of the Evil Magical Emperor that always happens in stories.
The Paladin who was part of the Hero's Party and helped caused the fall of the Magical Emperor comes back from 20 years of training in the wild, and sees shit has hit the fan for serfs/peasants across his home country, and the new states that were carved and are shitting on each other.
After killing a demon that was causing trouble for a small remote village, he decides to start his own Paladin Order and goes off to raise funds: from raiding dungeons, hunting down beasts and selling their skins, learning the ways of merchants, helping out other poor villages, + some other shenanigans, that eventually draws in the attention of new companions/friends/lords who join him/want him on their side, and several other factions that thinks he's a just lunatic running around trying to be a Hero.

I agree. There's no reason to have a fantasy setting in which the overarching plot is deciding which girl the MC will fuck. But on the other hand, that's hardly ever the only main plot point. The big bad guy is the demon lord, or an angel, etc. Could that be your gripe? That so many settings like that can be genericized to good guy and co squaring off against the big bad, or with other similarly linear plots?

This. What kills SAO is certainly the "is a game" twist when actually is fantasy setting. SAO wouldn't be as bad if it had gone full fantasy. This is specially obvious in willpower or in-world events that tried to be meanful when is just a game.
I dropped SAO around half way because I was tired of watching people in guilds dressing with the same equipment as if they were actual soldiers, talked like soldiers. The part where kids were in an orphanage and a player was acting as a nun...come on, those childs would be out there killing monster and would double your level.
Some time ago I tried to watch SAO II...just one episode in and people still was acting like characters inside the setting more than people inside a game. I managed to watch 12 episodes or so before drop it too...then again the very some flaw. Everything that happened in the part I watched would be reasonable if was a postapocalypse sci-fi world, but not as a game. Energy weapons are shit for pvp because everyone has a shield...unless you use an sword energy weapon? You can equip two weapons but conveniently Kirito could "borrow" other people weapon, there is a satelitte that shows everyone location to prevent you from hidden for more than 15 minutes (game map)...unless you are underwater, in a cave (but not in a building) or you have a broken item that allows you to be invisible that for some reason no one else in the game uses. Not to mention the "I don't want kill a girl" WHY is not that she is gonna die or something that was in the cursed game not in this one.

As a teleplay writer, I prefer character development. In my mind, a good story is driven by the characters choices to go with or against the events presented to them. Not having the characters blindly accept and follow the events of the plot.
But even when you focus on characters, it requires an equal focus on plot to work. When done correctly, the viewer doesn't notice either one and just enjoys the show. But too much focus on one or the other and the viewer notices the process. Which can ruin the suspension of disbelief. Though obviously there are people out there who prefer the opposite method of story-telling. That's just not my thing so I don't write that.
Setting isn't that big of a factor from my point of view. I can write the same story as a space fantasy or a Tolkien inspired fantasy. Just making minor changes to triggers, character descriptions and the locations. Now, a good story will find a way to make the setting more important and tied to the plot. But it isn't as big of a requirement as character development and plot. I also prefer more subtle setting where the viewer learns about the world by watching the characters develop in it. Not just being given tons of exposition and flashbacks to learn it.
And with that, I need to stop procrastinating on 4chan and get back to my actual writing.

I think there is more a matter of settle with it that actually liking it. I mean, I'd love to watch an story about an elder lich but Overlord is the most close I ever get.
And you can apply that to fantasy, of course I'd rather have actual fantasy any day, but the fact is what we have right now is "its a game" shows...so...is either that or nothing. I understand lot of people will chose "nothing" but there is also lot of people, like myself, that will conform with that because...there is nothing else.

For example, an adveturer would use pratical clothes, a commoner would use simple clothes.
For knights, I would opt for armors with pratical yet fancy designs. Higher the rank, fancier they look.
