Honestly, not taking into account which one I like more. Rei was a much more important influence on the plot and atmosphere of the show. She brought mystery and is involved in some of the biggest mind fucks in the series. Asuka was actually part of what ruined the atmosphere up to episode 13, turning the tone into a more comedic and silly one.
