I prefer Nanami just because she had a lot more of an actual personality than Mashiro while I get what you're saying I can't help but think with Mashiros personality she would of fit better as a side character and not the main heroine. I'll admit i'm biased but I still feel Nanami and Sortata had a better connection to me it felt like they could relate to each others failings, they both worked hard at what they did and both failed miserably, while mashiro was great at everything she did without really putting any effort because she was just naturally good. Also Sorata himself said that Nanami inspired him quite a few times in the show.
