I think 14. They aired the first episode during an "mtv anime week" they used to showcase a ton of first episodes from different anime.
I was immediately hooked and saved to buy the dvd which I thoroughly enjoyed. They're still one of my favorite belongings.
I was 12 watching it on Adult Swim.
It's kind of odd how it happened. I used to fall asleep with CN on and I woke up one night and this show was just about to start first episode. Ended up watching the whole thing. "Wow that was neat!" Fell asleep. Next night the exact same thing happened I woke up right before the second episode. Watched it again. I had no intentions on setting an alarm up for this to wake up and watch it or stay up to watch it this just happened. I somehow managed to wake up before all six episodes and watched it all. Fantastic show I couldn't comprehend. Rewatched it in full when I was older to get a better experience.
The exact same thing happened two years later but with Abenobashi when that was on TechTV. Loved that too and admit to it making me love Gainax just for these few memorable nights.
I remember yearning for episode 7 that never came. It really was cool enough that I didn't want it to end so soon.
I was still in high school when I watched it, so 16 or 17? I don't remember exactly when.
Friend burned it on a CD for me out of nowhere. Partly got me into anime more than just Toonami stuff.
