My favorite is probably Urusei Yatsura, but there's a lot of other good stuff too.
I'd like to watch The Kabocha Wine, but the English translation efforts on both the anime and manga are dead.

Last week I powered through my dad's VHS collection of Robotech (he has the original series, but that's it), and it was actually way better than I thought it would be. It was ugly as sin, but it had really good storytelling and engaging characters.

This actually came up during a sociology course I took in Tokyo. The professor used the miso thing as an example of the way Japanese people communicate indirectly. ...though they also said the lower frame rate in anime is an example of Japanese efficiency.

The ova boom was really special because budget aside, a whole lot of weird and interesting ideas got animated that never would have gotten a chance in a different environment.
Dunno if anime is getting better or worse as a whole, I think it really depends on your taste. I love sci-fi, and its been a long time since a really kick ass sci-fi anime dropped. At least one punch man is pretty cool.
