I didn't see this coming.
I got the impression Oku was tired of this series and his fans, but I don't know, what is his motivation? Does he want to punish us further? I haven't read it, but I'm not sure I want to.
More Gantz is always welcome as long as it doesn't get as convoluted as the Invasion arc.

I had to drop it when the vamps showed up and I just couldn't figure out what the fuck was happening since they were apparently real vamps and not aliens. Then the aliens DID show up and it was a complete clusterfuck. I was really enjoying it too especially when that one alien showed up to his school and scared the fuck out of him.

I remember I started this late. I caught up and then it took that big hiatus (I think around the time the live action movie was coming out?) I then realized it took Oku a full year unhindered to get through the Oni Alien arc and dropped it. From what I hear, that wasn't a bad decision.

Reika was best girl, but to me what killed the character wasn't killing her off, but allowing her to get a personal Kurono.
Point of the character was she could have everything in life, except the thing she wanted most.

I had read a shit ton of manga before Gantz but it was one of the first manga to ever make me feel urgency in what was happening. The fact that they were trying so hard to live then they got that little rest after the game was over, only to realize it's fucking reality and the aliens will fuck their shit up if they find them plus the mystery of what gantz was and what it was doing. Then the author just threw it all away and made everything feel so convoluted and pointless.

I was recently looking through some old Gantz chapters trying to remember some events that occurred. I started around the part the short alien wrecks kei's school.
I ended up reading like a hundred chapters or so over the next few hours straight. I seriously forgot how amazing early Gantz was. It was so much more exciting when everything was mysterious and you didn't know what the fuck was going to happen next.
If only Oku had decided on a plot sometime, Gantz could have been incredible.

Story was very good up to the Oni arc, in my opinion, and arguably Osaka's to some.
Once he started to explain shit he obvious never planned is when the downfall began.
Should have stuck to being a story about fucked up characters trying to survive fighting mysterious aliens.

Osaka is a pretty notable arc. I don't know if the bits leading up to it were any good though.
Troll god aliens was still the only good part of the last arc. It was the only time that it felt like Gantz. But of course the last arc was terrible.

I've read manga with death games before gantz but none of them made me feel anything like the first part of gantz did, maybe it was because gantz was the only sc fi based one (I love sc fi and fantasy crap) that I read or maybe it was the combination of sc fi and the little bit of school drama, power tripping that the MC was involved in that got me.

I actually think Tae was an interesting addition, if only to show how much Kurono had matured as a character (true love isn't about looks, etc), but that shit should have ended once he rescued her when she got targetted by Gantz. Everything after that was so unecessary and cringe worthy

Something I liked about Gantz was the attempted balance between their real lives and the death game and how their development was reflected in both.
No character was safe, and their terrible home-situations was the only breath of fresh air the survivors had in-between hunts. But as things got worse that peace started to break down. So people either learned to work together or hoped that they were crazy enough to make it as a loner.
It wasn't a complex set-up, but it was an interesting way to explore the cast. Shame that things had to get convoluted for the ending.

Every game has different rules, so it never really feels stale. I prefer it to Gantz easily.

The first series was alright, it sort of reminded of early Gantz. After reading all these death games though, that's what I think the problem is, it's just the same thing over and over again, despite the rules slightly changing. Like Real Account, the premise was sort of neat, but then, it just couldn't stop being the same old death game shit but with twitter.
The second season just got even more stupid and ridiculous. The characters are really uninteresting and could probably be described with one sentence descriptions. All my interest just died.

In kamisama no iutoori each game is an entirely different puzzle, it even turned into a battle manga temporarily with the god powers. I can understand if you found it boring, but to say it's repetitive isn't really giving the series it's credit.
You're right about the 2nd series protagonists though, they aren't interesting at all. And I often find myself getting the girls confused. But the games are still as interesting as ever.

The idea was that the invaders were upsetting the natural balance of things so the Room of Truth Aliens were taking steps to rectify it by creating Gantz. They used humans, but didn't prioritize their lives above anything else on Earth.
I'm not a big fan of it either, considering the effort they made to save humanity while bothering to reach out to the reporter in Germany about the truth, but I guess it is an attempt at an explanation.

The anime had me feeling confused with life, depressed, exhilarated, and craving more for weeks after I finished it. So great. I'm almost through the manga now, the spoilers on this post have me worried the ending couldn't possibly live up to expectations. Then I will feel the supreme despair, just like a character from Gantz! :)
