I actually follow the series because it is a perfect example of how to not write an animated series, so yes. I would know the story is terrible. Season 1 was not even one hour and you go through four different plots, season 2 was three plots that went nowhere and season 3 so far had one of the worst cliches that battle harem series do, of explaining powers. Except it was done by a commentator to people in the arena. Then a fight was ground to a halt for a bad joke with no punch line, followed by an episode where nothing happened that we didn't already know.

Every single episode is riddled with plotholes, from Ruby going from being able to run so fast that she can create hurricanes to not being able to outrun two generic grunts, to the bully who was so pathetically weak Jaune could beat him bullying a girl who was later revealed to be one of the strongest students in the school. There's a really simple reason for it: Monty thinks of action scenes he wants to do, then tells Miles to go write the plot that fits in between those moments. The plot is literally just created to be filler so Monty has more time to animate action scenes. And the action scenes are too few and not nearly good enough to justify the rest of the show. And Monty's animation method was insane, the dude would animate shot-by-shot out of order, which resulted in the magical teleporting highways or Cinder's disappearing mask, not even going into the insanity that is him refusing to make a base nude for his models because he doesn't want nudes of his characters leaking on the internet, so the character's fucking heights change depending on what they're wearing.

This. The only times I've ever seen someone be so purposefully incredibly, astoundingly deaf to a board before, is when it's a troll. If the series is published for a Japanese audience, it's manga no matter how "western-pandering" it is. If the series is published for an American audience (for example), it's an American comic book no matter how "Japanese" it is. Eh, I kinda felt like the beginning was trying to put on the manga-version of the Ruby Rose trailer which was like the very first trailer for RWBY. After that they just skipped ahead to where team RWBY is already together.
Art style... mehhh could be done better I think, it seems quite crude to me and the artstyle seems completely different from the animation, but of course I'm comparing it to Triple-A mangaka that I'm used to (like Oda, Kubo, Akamatsu, Okubo, etc etc) which isn't really fair. Especially if you compare to Akamatsu who I honestly think pays more attention to fine details than anyone (in his recent works).
But all in all I'm happy they're going all-out with RWBY and pushing it into all consumer bases (anime, manga, AND video games). That way it'll grow it's fanbase as much as it possibly can. I'm pretty much sold on buying Creatures of Grimm.
Anyway, overall I kinda feel already that the manga is going to take a different route than the animation is. It already feels like it's gonna go that way.
All in all, usually the book comes before the movie but that isn't the case with RWBY. For RWBY it's one of the rare cases where you should see the animation first.
