It's extremely difficult to imagine it in the hands of another studio due to its rather distinctive visual style and I don't think that would have been done elsewhere.

That's actually a good question. So much of the creative direction behind it is very, very SHAFT and was basically improvised on their part for lack of descriptions from Nisio. Essentially the circumstances for how Monogatari came about looking/flowing like it does are pretty much thanks to SHAFT's situation at the time and probably would not have occurred if another studio did it.
When this series started in 2009 SHAFT was still essentially the obscure, funky little studio making everything on budgets of whatever crumbs of weed were left in Shinbo's tracksuit pockets and a couple McDonald's runs. Since the series was an instant hit it naturally made sense to try to fuck with its composition/design as little as possible hence it's somewhat of a time capsule, preserving the old quirky/hyper-budget SHAFT.

I've started marathoning this series last week and I must say, it's one of the best looking anime all time.
I don't even like harem and tsundere that much, but I'm loving the series and its atmosphere.
I mean, the animation itself is pretty average, but the art (especially the lighting) in the series is fantastic.
I think Monogatari is a perfect exemple that you don't need a high budge to make a good looking anime.
