Probably other cities etc, namely entire world. Despite some shitty christian symbolism I don't really get why people are stuck on thinking it's some sort of metaphorical afterlife. At least I cannot understand the theory that every non-haibane is "npc": I don't think it's far fetched to think the town is just isolated because supernatural events and people coexisting with them are scary, regards entire humanity.

The wall of Glie is a reference to glial cells or neuroglia if you will. Their purpose is to maintain homeostasis, and provide support and protection for neurons in the central nervous system. Basically it is the limit of their minds/cocoons.

Pretty much. Doesn't really describe what's beyond the walls though. Could be a sort of reincarnatino thing where there's a whol world where they go and live out another life until they die and repeat the cycle, or it could be some sort of eternal paradise, or even some sort of wasteland that blocks that area off from paradise. While it's clearly an after-life metaphor, that alone doesn't explain what's beyond the walls.

I understand why you believe that but it'd still seriously fucking blow for the haibane. Also what would even be the point of the show? Of Glie at all? Mind wipe someone so that they can learn to be better people and feel accomplished and then mind wipe them again? None of the shit dealt with in the show would even matter. The fact that the theme of this show is not to be afraid to ask for help if you need it has me convinced that the renmei endgame is heaven, the entire show is trivialized if it isn't.
Reki says "what the walls signify is death" according to my subs, but the city itself is a sort of purgatory, as the catechism of the Catholic church states:
"All who die in God’s grace and friendship, but still imperfectly purified, are indeed assured of their eternal salvation; but after death they undergo purification, so as to achieve the holiness necessary to enter the joy of heaven.
The Church gives the name Purgatory to this final purification of the elect."
Therefor, the walls are a transition, a metaphysical waystation of sorts, so the outside of the walls I would imagine is a kind of hypostasis of body and soul which includes death, but the walls cannot "be" death even in analogy, because death is the act or movement of bodily demise, but there are other things which may happen to you after death.

Well I think that the idea is a sort of cleansing of the "soul". It's kind of like in Buddhism where you have to work off bad karma if you do badly in life, the idea being that even if you don't remember this life when you're reincarnated, you still get your next life based on things you did in this one. Obviously this is a loose take, but I don't think it's an unrealistic idea that Glie is a sort of realm where people work through their past life issues before reincarnation.

Well I'd disagree that the show becomes pointless as a result, I'm just explaining why. I get that we'll probably just end up with differing views, but I don't think that having it be a sort of waystation to help people along their path makes it worse even with the mind wipe. It's pretty up for interpretation though, so while I think mine is right, I'm not going to deny the definite possibility that they had a different intention in mind.

Haibane Renmei is next on my list of rewatches after I finish Sora no Woto again (the two shows are actually weirdly similar now that I think about it). I haven't seen it in a good 5 years or so and I'm looking forward to it. It's always interesting to see the things you notice on a second watch of something.

I was one of the fools who looked up recommendations to watch after Haibane and I went in expecting something like it.
What I got was military K-on, my failed expectations ruined SnW forever for me.

I know exactly how you feel, the first time I watched it I thought it was a real letdown because I was hoping for something more than a military themed K-On with a quick exciting ending to make it seem worthwhile.
I'm enjoying it far more during this rewatch though because I know what I'm getting into and am paying far more attention to its best points like the great music and art direction, the fantastic world building that's never forced and the great sense of mystery that it creates without spoiling it with concrete answers. SnW really shines most in the details instead of in the plot or the characters, far more so than Haibane Renmei which keeps the viewer interested with explicit mysteries.
I like them both, they're just presented in very different ways despite their similarities.
