Since Yoko Kanno is pretty much known as a musical plagiarist and thief at this point, why isn't she in jail yet?

This is dumber than going to jail for pirating cartoons.

You mean like every other fucking composer ever?

Jesus fuck, are you retards so detached from reality that you aren't at all aware of how common this happens throughout history in every creative medium?
>>
>>133838149
I can understand ripping off tracks from other anime and the like, but it takes some balls to plagarize a piece as well-known as He's a Pirate and then hope no one notices.
>>
>>133838243
It takes very little to stay alive in modern societies.

>>133838251

Somebody has to press charges. And everyone in the music industry knows how common this kind of plagiarism is because they've done it themselves.

That's just one instance. Hell, Iwasaki, who is insane enough to give us something like Rap Opera, plagiarized pretty recently the main theme from a certain other popular movie.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gBXaLp9zbMM
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0kGAz6HYM8
>>
>>133838149
For sure, Hans Zimmer never plagiarized anyone. It's not like he's been sued for it or anything.

>>
Whoa, was Yoko Kanno always this cute?
We can't be putting cute girls in jail man, what's wrong with you?

We can dump Sawano there though
>>
>>133838431
Yeah, no doubt Iwasaki copied Zimmer's arrangement on that one, but the melodies are distinctively his. It also ties really well with his other pieces for Gatchaman S1 like M27.

Kanno's Pirates rip-off sounds like a shitty version of the original with a fraction of the orchestra.
>>
>>133838490
Hold up, Hans Zimmer didn't write the soundtrack of Pirates. I was confused because the person who did was copying him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vInYMVxYhh4
>>

All else is forgiven as long as that's hers.
>>
>>133838490
Did you seriously just compare some Hollywood movie song to the goddamn Symphony of Planets, some of the most well-known orchestral music ever?
>>
The funny thing is that all the stuff she's stolen is total shit (both the originals and her versions) while some of her own music is awesome like the Sousei no Aquarion OST.
>>
>>133838638

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNtzmOliIos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=78wvvIYUABE

But this is the first instance where I see him actually plagiarizing. Still got nothing on Kanno though when it comes to that.
>>
This is nothing unusual in anime soundtracks.
It's a result of a director saying "I imagine this song would fit this scene, so please make a song that sounds like this song".
If you're well-versed in your music, it's very easy to spot out influences and "rip-offs".
>>
Fuck all musicians. My ancestors invented all melodies back in stone age, just to get them stolen years later.
>>
>>133838149
This is the dumbest shit posted all night. Are artists not allowed to adhere to or emulate a style anymore? Fuck, the Beatles and the Beach Boys stole from each other all the fucking time like this and you never heard anyone complaining.
>>
>>133838720
I don't know about that. From what I've read up, anime composers are usually only given a script and some key images to base off their music off of. The directors rarely ever ask for any specific piece of music. Hell, quite often lots of pieces of music composed aren't even used in the show.
>>
Someone should sue AliceSoft for ripping off the German national anthem for Rance's theme

Because she is the richest and most influencial woman in Japan.

Yoko Kanno is just a pseudonim and fake persona for Rumiko Takahashi. She became the richest woman in japan early, and then getting bored with making just manga ventured into other stuff under pseudonims, sometimes hiring actors for public "apperances".

List of her achivements:
Voice Actor as Megumi Hayashibara
Composer as Yoko Kanno
Scriptwriter as Mari Okada
Singer as Maya Sakamoto and Gabriela Robin

>>
At least she is not as bad as Yuki Kajiura, that for years is ripping of herself unable to make anything original or worthy.
>>
I'm waiting for the day Zun sues Sawano first, or at least for Sawano to write an actually new abd original track for once. I'm so tired of hearing his basically five pieces remixed yearly.
>>
>>133839023
This, really. Kanno may be ripping off others, but it's thanks to her that I've come to know so many classical and contemporary composers and musicians. I see her as more of a messenger than a composer.

Meanwhile, hacks like Kajiura and Sawano rip themselves off so much that they basically have become black holes at this point: empty and devoid of any substance.
>>
>>133839071
Sawano on one hand has great talent, on other hand very limited to specific spectre and he litterally does repeat same formula over and over, without shred of originality. Up to German chorals and same beats.

He`s not as bad as Kajiura yet, but getting old fast.

>The guy is a composer on par with Joe Hisaishi but has always been pigeonholed to the same old "hip" music like techno and dubstep that he hasn't really had time to properly shine.

It may also be because very rarely does he get the budget for a good orchestra like Hisaishi or Oshima. Even now most of his "orchestral" compositions are done with a synth.
>>
>>133839576
No, I think like Hisaishi, Iwasaki does best with a smaller orchestra, which is what he typically uses. I actually find his style to be quite similar to Hisaishi, in how he arranges his melodies and how minimalist his instrumentation is. Hisaishi specializes in wonder and nostalgia, Iwasaki specializes in melancholy and hope.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZcaxRGZyWEY

Having a larger orchestra like in Agito didn't feel like it was doing Iwasaki any favors anyway.

It's not as retarded when the "pirate" is selling it and not just distributing it for free. Rip offs are one thing, but with some digital music couldn't you theoretically make the exact same song as someone less famous than you and sell that?

>A Town with a Small Market

>>
>>133840164
It depends on what actually transpired. If they're just selling it, then all they're doing is redistributing media that they themselves physically reproduced.

Ask yourself this: If pirates are free to distribute media everywhere for free, then how would they sell it in the first place?

If they're claiming they "created" it (IE actual plagiarism) then they're already guilty for committing impersonation and/or fraud.

In the case of soundtracks for visual media it's pretty much a moot point, since the same song can have a completely different effect when applied in a different scenario. One can make the argument that, artistically, a song applied to a new media is a different work from the song on it's own or in it's original source.

And frankly, that kind of thing is going to happen even with copyright laws anyway.

I'm pretty sure there are legal lines drawn for what is and isn't plagiarism, and you'd have to break down the music note by note to figure it out.
>>
>>133837232
every musician plagiarizes - can't be helped.
>>
>>133839451
You are a fucking retard. If it is within the same franchise, it is NOT plagiarism - it is used to set up specific moods as per request of the producer.

So yes, she gets credit for something she didnt' write, but mixed it up enough to remain true to the original AND make it unique enough to be a new piece.

You fucking morons are getting stupider by the day.
>>
>>133838586
IT's funny - the gladiator bit plagiarizes more than Kanno does.

Also: they are copying a STYLE of music does not mean the notes are the same. else, we wouldn't have 90% of the music we have, in terms of genre...
>>
>>133839972
Those two songs have completely different melodies. One evokes the feeling of the other, but they are not the same. If you want a blatant rip-off, Mushroom hunting is a better example. Kanno has said that this song was supposed to be an homage, though.

Add VN to that too. If it means Butcher never gets to write again, I'd be happy with that. Same with all of Type Moon.

Current Western music is based on plagiarism, by the way.

Anno was involved deeply in the development of Nausicaa. I think Miyazaki would approve him taking inspiration from it.

Nope. All he did was animated the God Warrior for the movie. Nausicaa is 100% Miyazaki.

Is her strongest work actually original?
>>

>Hans Zimmer didn't write the soundtrack of Pirates
He wasn't credited as the primary composer but he more or less did.
>>
Despite the plagiarism, Kanno is still one of the best anime composers, largely because of her original stuff. She has range and writes memorable tunes. Much better than, say, Kajiura, who hasn't moved beyond samey "mood music" for over a decade and a half. Why can't she do shit like this again? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G0PWCWyB_Ko

>>
>>133852982
>>133856024
Ya this is classic homage. They're two totally different melodies but the songs have very similar styles and framings. As soon as you can say "they're two different melodies" then they're two completely different songs. But the fact that they're so stylistically similar (as opposed to substantially similar) is obviously intentional. That's the definition of homage.
>>
>>133854507
>Even that "masterpiece" known as Evangelion ripped off from the James Bond Soundtrack.
Given the legal battles he fought over the Bond theme, I'm pretty sure John Barry is aware of the difference between homage and plagiarism.

People here don't seem to know the difference between blatantly copying and just sounding similar. There is a lot of music out there that sounds similar to one another, but it doesn't mean that they are copying each other.
>>
>>133855890
Probably because everyone keeps asking for her samey "mood music".
>>
>>133845829
Anime existed without LNshit for 50 years.
>>
>>133837232
Can't say much about her music since my knowledge of other styles of music is limited, but she always struck me as having a very fake personality in her interviews, even moreso when she's on camera (her fake high-pitched voice for example, which occasionally cracks).
