Why is this Anime so popular despite being so decidedly average?
Only popular on MAL. Considering how melodramatic and meh it is, you are right to say it isn't anything special.
Only reason I could fathom is the fact she dies at the end but that was already predictable from the opening and from the half way mark.

Probably aniplex magic.
It kills the suffering and tragedy if he loses the girl he loves, and then gets swiftly rescued by his support system of his friends, protege, teacher, and runner up love interest.
It would have hit harder if he had never had so many friends in the first place.
I dunno. It got me pretty good because I have mommy issues as well, so those sequences always ended up piercing me.
Other than that, there were some other concepts that I could identify with, and for that reason, it was good to me. I can definitely understand why it wouldn't be great for some people, though. It's predictable as all hell, but, in the end, I think it comes down to how much you can relate to it, which is hardly a good thing in a story, but eh.

Average... I will admit that this any didn't do anything outstanding. But at the very least this anime is above average.
it's not popular except on mal

newfags with 10-second memories think a dying girlfriend is edgy when it's literally the most cliche thing in anime
That and top tier directing on the first episode. After it was meh but first impressions and all.
As mediocre as the show was, the OP/ED gets me every time ;_;

I liked it but then I decided to rewatch Nodame and had a better time.
>tfw no Nodame girlfriend
That's real suffering, not a dying bitch.

I know right? It kind of made her death less meaningful in the narrative, which is pretty retarded

Because it's a short, "muh feels" packed show with a decent soundtrack that aired recently.
You could ask the same question about Clannad 5-6 years ago.Nodame Cantabile is a better music-based drama without forced tearjerks.

I disliked how it ended so open-endedly. After the catharsis that was the last episode of S1, it feels like they should have "finished" the story better in paris-hen.
Haven't read the manga though, I expect it will do a better job in that regard as manga generally does.

But Clannad is actually good and it doesn't even fuck with you until about 40 episodes in.
If I wanted to get sad about someone dying I'd just go read Sundome again.

starfish ghost happens pretty early in and it was a significant departure from the happy-go-lucky feel of the show at that point
