To be fair, the horrible art of Kanon 2003 is a perfect adaptation of Key's art style.
Ayu's disappearance was done better in 2002 and Nayuki's confession was done well. In 2006 her confession was dropped and Ayu's disappearance wasn't very good.

Toei's Kanon looks cheaper but cleaner and somewhat appealing in a 'could be a mahou shoujo from that time' -way. Kyoani Kanon polished essentially the same designs and makes only a superficial difference.
Granted I thought the former was unwatchable for long since everyone was saying so so I've only watched 2006.

KyoAni's greatest improvement isn't the artstyle, but the fact that they managed to merged ALL the routes into one story, and doing so in a way that makes sense.
