Every i-adjective has a clear distinction between the functions of its -い ending and its -く ending, right? Yet for some reason, in colloquial speech すごい, and only すごい, is used as an adverb while still retaining the -い ending. For example, you can say either すごくたのしかった or すごいたのしかった and it won't make a difference, but you can only say 厳しく扱ってくれる and not 厳しい扱ってくれる. I believe ひどい also does this sometimes. I wonder what makes them so special that they seem to be the only i-adjectives that went through this "adverbalization" process. Probably because they're so common in spoken language, but then a lot of other adjectives would have been good candidates too.

You're doing it wrong. Just pick it up through reading more.
Most of those meanings go along with set expressions, so if you see カギをかける and the meaning of かける confuses you there then add the whole expression.

I can give you three good reasons not to mine it at all. First, for obvious reasons you don't get a lot of benefit from doing words that are very common in anki, and かける is extremely common. You'd be better off using that deck space with some other word. Second, anki doesn't work very well if you have to stop and think about several meanings of a word, it's supposed to be fast, but there's also no reason to pick on meaning of かける over any other, so it's just not very suited for an anki card. Finally, memorizing a list of meanings might give you the wrong idea about the verb. Many of these meanings only arise in specific constructions which you're better off getting acquainted through exposition.

I never have and I don't think that would be necessary. Most words have at most 2 or 3 notably distinct usages, so it's easy to fit all of it in a single card. Those words that do have a lot of usages tend to be extremely common like かける. Having that said, I don't think there's anything wrong with isolating a specific usage of a word in a card if you think it would be better for you to reinforce that in your memory, and it just might happen that a word has two usages you wish to reinforce in isolation, though I don't think this has ever happened to me. In general, I think it's just better to 'get to know' a word through exposure. Anki is best reserved for the simple task of making a simple connection between a word and a simple meaning, you can expand on the complexity of the word later.

Bad idea. Leeches are leeched for a reason - anki didn't effectively get you to memorize them. You have to study leeches outside of anki, you have to give them extra special attention. Write them each 10 times, make mnemonics, do custom study for them every day. Or, let them be suspended and just pick them up through reading, though I don't recommend that. Either way, don't be retarded and unsuspend them

I'm learning Chinese just to learn it. Same thing happened with Japanese at a certain point. If the learning process isn't reward enough you will probably end up stagnating as a intermediate and be forever in this vague inbetween zone where you have to guess at stuff based on context and never really understanding everything. Meh. If you keep guessing based on context eventually all of your guesses will be right. If you keep reading (and looking up words) you will achieve close to 100% understanding soon enough (couple years) for familiar contexts. 90% of that "vague understanding haze" is not knowing the vocab well, and 10% being unfamiliar with grammar, obviously looking up words will eliminate the unknown vocab and simple quantity will solve the grammar problem, so no worries.
