nah, it's not that bad. It's one of the most hilarious anime I've seen so far. I enjoyed it for that reason. It's like as if some edgy 13 year old wrote it.

The loveable dependent retard archetype is one I'm glad is mostly dead.
Came back a little with Pet Girl and Yuki-Chan.
It is pretty graphic, but there have been a LOT more violent animes since its airing. It also ended in a pretty shitty spot that wasn't even close to half way through the manga and just suddenly...ended.
To be fair, the manga turned into a goddamn mess of a series, but it really need some better closure or a new OVA similar to Hellsing.

It was good for its time and is still watchable for the nostalgic value. I still love that opening song.
I think it's garbage, the first 10 minutes are the best part out of the whole thing.
The characters are as flat as cardboard, and almost all completely unlikable dolts.
The terms gets overused by some, but it honestly one of the most try hard and edgy things I've seen. It's a middleschooler's idea of what makes something dark and mature: tits and gore.

It's ultimately a lackluster show.

It was fine for me ten years ago but only because I didn't know better. Most people have some attachment to it because it was, alongside School Days, one of those "gory animes" that edgy kids tried to think as choking.
I don't know, I liked it in it's time but now I can't see myself enjoying something like this.

/a/'s taste is extremely suspect, and it's doubtful that it's just the gore, which as you said is common, that draws casuals to Elfen Lied. And /a/ hates anything that casuals like, by default, which, before even getting into anything implied by pic related, sort of contributes to why /a/'s opinion is shit more often than not.
