Does a native English speaker sound as bad speaking Japanese as a Japanese person speaking English does?
>>
>>133730778
English speakers always sound shitty when they try to speak some other language.
>>
>>133730778
I doubt it. Japanese has a very limited set of sounds which are very consistently put together, so it'd be pretty hard to fuck it up too badly, no matter how shit your pronunciation was.
>>
>>133730778
I don't know how accurate this is, but I once asked why japanese sounds so cute and someone said it's because japanese has more limited sounds and combinations of sounds so it sounds cute because it's like a baby that can't make all the sounds that we can

But on the other hand, we must sound to them like other languages sound to us that have a wider range of sounds, which usually don't sound cute at all. They just either sound completely silly and ridiculous or really rough.
So that's probably how we sound to japs
>>
>>133730887
Prove it. (Or somebody else prove it in case you're not native.)

I always wanted to hear what an English accented in Japanese really sounded like and not just a native Jap doing an impression of it.

Thanks. I don't even know why people like exhentai, since I can go to hitomi.la and get a direct download without having to rely on torrents.

I think I had an addon that let me get in before, but it stopped working. And I've done the cookie thing in the past but it took me like half an hour to do it and I clear my cookies all the time so it was just annoying.

I think exhentai has the most content directly uploaded, while sites like hitomi.la actually just "steal" exhentai's stuff. I know I've personally put a lot of galleries on exhentai that other people download and put on all sorts of other sites. So, in short, if you want the most stuff and you want it the fastest, panda is the way to go.

This. The only time I've had to mess with my cookies is when I've tried to visit exhentai before logging into e-hentai. If you do that, exhentai sets a cookie in your browser which I guess marks you as not being logged in, so you have to delete it or you'll keep getting stuck at the sad panda even after you've logged into your e-hentai account.

I've never had to edit a cookie or anything like that though. I just log into e-hentai and that's it.

Post your correct % for today. You might not be doing as badly as you think you are, but it's hard to say without seeing your stats.

Also, if you're having trouble with kanji, I would recommend writing them out as you encounter them. There's no need to be stupid about it and write them out 50 times each. Just a few times will do. Go to Jisho.org, look up the kanji in question, read the meaning of it and look at some words which use it (all this information should be on the kanji's page), then write the character out a few times (with proper stroke order) until you get the gist of it, then move on to the next one.

Okay, that really is bad. Are you perhaps being too liberal with the good and easy buttons and not using the hard button enough?

I don't really know what to advise beyond telling you to write the characters out. You could try doing a radical deck, I guess. I never did, but I've seen others recommend it before, so it might be worth looking into if kanji are really giving you that much trouble.

I think it will get better for you over time as you see more and more of them. The same few elements (radicals) will keep repeating across lots of different kanji, so after a whole most new kanji will just be different combinations of elements that you're already familiar with. It's just a matter of toughing it out until you reach that point.

It'd be spicy for me.

Wait a sec, just how many new cards were you trying to learn here? You're doing something stupid like 75 new cards a day, aren't you?

Judging from your comment, doing Anki in the way you're doing it now is extremely unpleasant for you (then, 2+ hours with a 60% correct rate would be unpleasant for anyone). You might've toughed it out today, but with a correct % like that it's going to be just as bad or even worse tomorrow. Turn down your new cards before you burn out and quit. I'd even say turn off your new cards completely for a few days and let your daily reviews drop a bit.

>>133736219
Add every new word you see.
>>
>>133736219
It really doesn't matter as long as you are reading a lot and aren't doing so little that you aren't learning the new kanji that you come across.
>>
>>133736219
Just read as much as you can and add every new word to your mining deck.
>>
>>133736219
Sit down, read until you think you've read a decent amount (or keep reading after that if you're enjoying yourself, which you should be). In the meantime mine words you think would be nice to reinforce the memory off. You shouldn't be worried about more details than this. The important thing is that you keep reading as much as possible.

I plan on making a textfile of words and then using Rikaisama to import them to Anki, but without a clearly defined goal for how much I should be reading, it will be easy for me to be lazy and tell myself I've done enough when perhaps I haven't.

For instance, with Anki everyone says to aim for 20 words a day, so I kept that as my target and stuck to it, but I don't know what the target is in words or time when it comes to reading.
>>
>>133736349
This. In early stages you don't need to mine more than 10% of what you see to maintain an active deck. Even in later stages you don't need to mine more than a third of the new words you see. The only time when it's good to mine much more than that is when you're starting on something new which might have a more specific vocabulary. You might want to learn a lot of those new words fast.
>>
>>133736428
You should be reading because you want to, not to hit a set goal.
>>
>>133736428
Plenty, when you start out, it isn't uncommon to add around 200+ words per day.
>>
>>133736428
>it will be easy for me to be lazy and tell myself I've done enough when perhaps I haven't.
That's more a matter of your own self-discipline than a matter of Japanese learning. The consensus is that you should read as much as possible, so if you must set a fixed goal set it as high as you think you're capable of fulfilling.

Do I need to give up being bilingual to learn Japanese?

Hello, I'm a 22 year old male who is seriously studying Japanese in the US. I get a lot of passive immersion and text Japanese people on LINE. But I feel like to learn this language I have to give up both my native languages and I'm willing to do that. However It's not easy and I have to constantly use Spanish and English. I was wondering if being trilingual was possible at this age (22) I know it's kind of ridiculous but I just feel so old and late so if I have to give up Spanish and English to learn Japanese what should I do... or is it possible to still be strong in all 3 languages before I die? I know Japanese will always be a life long process... but I want to use Japanese only!! I like reading in Spanish too and was wondering if I also have to give that up. I donot use English much now except for work. Please someone help and let me know.
Like If I were to go to Japan I would have to stop speaking Spanish and English. But like my main question is if it's still possible to have good knowledge in all 3 languages or do I have to give up my native languages for Japanese? Like I said I would do it because immersion in Japanese is important to me and I really love Japan. I have been told that in order to really well learn the language Japanese needs to always be used, no exceptions. If I can't express in Japanese then I stay quiet until I learn how to say it in Japanese. I like the method but would like more input please.

1 - I decided that if I didn't recognize a word within 3 seconds, I didn't know it well enough, so my average speed per card is about 3s. I don't really recommend this too much because I end up struggling to memorize certain tricky words due to not thinking about it enough
2 - 99% of my cards have kanji I'm pretty familiar with so reading them is like reading kana.

I'm really sure that google has their top departments working day and night to figure out how to represent written japanese and english in a way that a neural network could map the two together -- toiling tirelessly over breaking keyboards, coffee-stained pants, and oily, sweaty, unshaved beards. Absolutely positive.
>>

I'm sure while typing that you realized how off-base and ridiculous you're getting, so I consider that a good ending note.
>>
>>133739245
That's literally the only way that machine TL could ever be revolutionized. Otherwise there are always going to be serious fundamental problems with it. Tokenization is the single hardest problem in natural language computer science. It's not people working on machine TL, because the problem also applies in domains other than actual natural language processing.

I'm sure that you understand the problems associated with making a heuristic that is correct. Doing that itself is an NP problem. If you approximate a heuristic you're only doing what has already been done.
>>
>>133739330
tl;dr: linguistics is fucking hard and we're barely scratching the surface

It's sophistry to act like the theory is anywhere close enough to allowing for reasonable machine TL

I dont get the point of the passive form, neither do I get how to use it. Ill keep rereading trying to get it, but any of you anons want to tell me your understanding of it? I get the causative form, but there doesn't seem to be much written about the passive form.

All Ive just heard is:

Yes, there are leagues of people working on the problems inherent in machine translation. I see you went into autistic nerd rage over the word "tirelessly" (I see now why you made the inane reference to people working with coffee-stained pants. Really, anon?) so I politely removed that for you.

You blew a statement (apparently THE statement) out of proportion, angrily ranted about it, and in the end you said nothing of value. May this serve as a lesson not to care so much about trivial things, and as a lesson not to try and act smart without due basis.

It is the subject, but it's not the actor. The actor does the verb, and the subject is acted by the actor. That's how passives work. English passives are written the same way.

Computer science is a formal science, like math. It doesn't actually involve delving into the nature of the universe, but it does deal in logic, and acts as an important support to the rest of the STEM community. Do you think that the LHC wasn't, to a notable extent, the brain child of all of those people sitting around thinking about logarithms for decades on end? The LHC wouldn't have been possible a hundred years ago. We largely have computer scientists to thank for figuring out how to capture, process, and convey information in such a quick, clean manner.

Three things.
One, there is one of those being made, but it's awful.
Two, those things are available as graded readers, no need to shoehorn a clunky VN system into it.
Three, the current tools for learning Japanese are pretty much perfect, I can think of nothing else that would make learning Japanese an easier experience, so don't worry about making software.

>Precise definitions vary,[4] but features often cited as characteristic of hard science include producing testable predictions, performing controlled experiments, relying on quantifiable data and mathematical models, a high degree of accuracy and objectivity, and generally applying a purer form of the scientific method.[2][5][6][7][8] A closely related idea (originating in the nineteenth century with Auguste Comte) is that scientific disciplines can be arranged into a hierarchy of hard to soft on the basis of factors such as rigor, "development", and whether they are "theoretical" or "applied", with physics, and chemistry typically being the hardest, biology in an intermediate position, and the social sciences being the softest.[4][9]

>Some philosophers and sociologists of science have questioned the relationship between these characteristics and perceived hardness or softness. The more "developed" hard sciences do not necessarily have a greater degree of consensus or selectivity in accepting new results.[10] Commonly cited methodological differences are also not a reliable indicator. Psychologists use controlled experiments and economists use mathematical modelling, but as social sciences both are usually considered soft sciences,[1][2] while natural sciences such as biology do not always aim to generate testable predictions.[6] There are some measurable differences between hard and soft sciences. For example, hard sciences make more extensive use of graphs,[4][11] and soft sciences are more prone to a rapid turnover of buzzwords.[12]
