Are there any other mango artists like Yuichi Kumakura?

Miura
>>
>>133705744
So obvious I didn't even think of it.
>>
>>133705519
What the fuck even happened here. King of Bandits Jing was by no means amazing, but it was pretty good for being super-90s. And Twilight Tales had some amazing art and cute waifus. Where did it all go? Is he dead?
>>
>>133705839
>>133705744
But Miura didn't fall off the face of the Earth. He came back with a vengeance and was always active on social media talking about iM@S.

This is more like Fujiwara Sato or Daisuke Sato. Nyan Koi and Highschool of the Dead writer.
>>
Yoshihiro Togashi
>>
>>133705980
>Your art becomes god-tier
Disqualified.
>>
>>133705864
Apparently he made something called Q & A in 2006 and thats it, or thats as much as I can find.

Seems odd that you'd get that good at drawing and then just stop.
>>
>>133706048
Apparently there are also artbooks or something of his work out there according to Amazon, but the only thing he's known for is Jing. Q&A isn't even collected in something.

I have no idea what is up with this guy. Maybe he quit the industry after doing the thing he wanted and not wanting to be anyone's assistant?
>>
>>133706323
Yeah Q&A looks like a oneshot. What a waste of talent.
>>
Maybe he's sick and dying of the Japanese cold.

https://twitter.com/kuma166

His twitter has 0 tweets. Zero Tweets.
>>
>>133706402
He doesn't even have a Facebook, unless it's private which is totally possible.
>>
>>133706378
So getting back to >>133705519, are there any other mangaka or anime directors like this who are still alive and didn't just die? I mean, I guess Nagano of the Five Stars Stories could count, if we discount the production of Gothicmade in 2011 and new FSS manga in 2014 since there was a long drought between them and FSS the movie.
>>
>>133706511
I'm trying to remember the name of that semi autobiographical manga about the mangaka that literally kept running away from home because he couldn't take it anymore.

This is annoying the shit out of me.
>>
>>133706511
There are plenty of one- or two-off directors who have other roles most of the time, but I don't think that counts.
>>
>>133706463
According to a Chinese webpage at

creationDetail.php?sn=744338

He's worked on Monster as an assistant, produced King of Bandits Jing playing cards in 2006, produced something called 『熊倉本 LOVE-CHILDREN』(マガジンZ 2006年5月號 贈品) that ran in the May issue of Magazine Z, which had previously published King of Bandits Jing, and then nothing appears in the record.
>>
>>133706679
The otter guy from Bakuman?
>>
>>133706815
He also has a Japanese Wikipedia entry.

https://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/%E7%86%8A%E5%80%89%E8%A3%95%E4%B8%80

The first installment, "MOPNSTER" ... first post work. Story mischief scientists annoy monsters.
The second installment "So Ken Den" ... "comic bonbon" Newcomer Award Honorable Mention. Posted in 1994 to the "comic bonbon winter break jumbo extra number."
Third installment "Paradise boy (Paradise Boy) Punk"
Fourth installment, "the king BANDIT JING" ... series start in the "comic bonbon" from 1995. After that, the series changed the title in "Monthly Magazine Z" magazine in the "KING OF BANDIT JING". Writing until the seventh volume, respectively. Currently indefinite hiatuses in.
Fifth installment, "Q & A" ... series start in the "Monthly Magazine Z" from 2006. And during the hiatuses for medical treatment now.

So, again, the Japanese cold has claimed another victim. Fucking Japan.

>代表作である『王ドロボウJING』では、熊倉本人もジンやその他のキャラの顔をよく忘れるので作画の時はジンの単行本が手放せないと語っている。
>In a masterpiece "king BANDIT JING", when the drawing so forget good Kumakura himself gin and face of the other characters I have said let go Jin hardcover.

So Google Translate gives me that, which sounds like he drew so good he forgot what Jing's face looked like so he quit. But that doesn't sound right.

>>133706919

What a genius.
>>

Nah, its an actual autobio about a mangaka.
>>
Is the Jing manga worth checking out?

I was disappointed by the anime.
>>
>>133707245
MU has a couple tags for biographies and stuff about mangaka, so you could try those if you cared. I was going to do it myself, but I found an autobiography about a mangaka who married a Chinese girl half his age, and now I'm going to read that instead.

>Disappointed by the anime
What exactly did you expect? The anime is pretty good.

But yes, the manga is good, Twilight Tales is even better because the art becomes really sumptuous and sexy thanks to a much better use of contrast and screentones.

But there are no good scans, so you'll have to buy them off eBay.
>>
>>133707368
Yeah.
>>
>>133707378
Imagine if Oda lived this way.
>>
>>133707466
>>133707470
Okay okay, I'll read it for myself.

Looks like the Tokyopop localizations were ripped to godoka, are those no good?

I guess I expected something like Kino when I watched the anime, but I ultimately thought Jing felt fairly shallow.
It was a long time ago though, now, and regardless, I'm willing to judge the manga on its own merits.
>>
>>133707378

>a Jing thread on /a/
Holy shit. Also Anisette best girl
>>
>>133707579
I feel like Jing is a lot like Kino and Mushishi, but it meets a different niche. Kino is for people who like sad, thoughtful stories about human frailty and sin. Mushishi is for people who like mostly positive, mysterious stories where nature, rather than people, take center stage. Jing is more for people who like fairy tales with more action set in a grungey, punkish kind of world.
>>
>>133709154
At least in the anime, I didn't feel like Jing had "more action", but like I said, I'm certainly willing to give the manga a fair shot.
>>
>>133709138
Why is she the only one with porn when there's a sexy chocolate-skinned amazon and a prototype Nashetania in Twilight Tales? Or the cute sheriff and lonely princess in the original?
>>
>>133709179
The anime is shit compared to the manga. The art is pretty rough at first but gets better and better.
>>
>>133709212
>>133709179
The anime is kind of shit compared to the manga. The color palette is absolute crap, Studio Pierrot-tier, and the animation is really stiff except for the last arc's battle scenes. Some of it's not even 2000s Flash tier.

But I found the anime to be pretty fun and funny. Maybe not action-packed, but the episodes are not all talk like most Mushishi and Kino episodes.
>>
>>133707332
Anime is based off the first 5 volumes of Jing. The OVA movie is entirely based off book 4. 6 and 7 were never done as well as the rest of twilight tales.

Also its implied in the last book in twilight tales that he stays with that storys girl, at least in the TP translation unless they were wrong.
>>
>>133709212
The anime's not bad. It just has a low budget and was made in that awkward transition period when most studios had no idea what to do with digital animation.
>>
>>133709278
Wait what? What's the final arc of Twilight Tales? I've only read up to book 4 of TT.

And >>133706889 implies that the story would eventually continue if he stops being dead.
>>
I forgot how good the OP and ED were too.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=frgkTRoRrAc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XjbESCRe6ys
>>
>>133709349
The ED's art was really good at evoking the feeling that the Jing stories would bring out when I read the manga, while the art in the OP was really good match for the series' general look if not animation. The music was good too.

But wow, they really emphasized that last arc didn't they.
>>
Any chance the series will get BDs?

Johji Manabe, creator of Outlanders. Who are some people you want to disappear? Also on another note, I feel sorry for some of these guys when you look at their bibliography, and it consists primarily of one major work that they did or are currently doing. There are some guys still at it that I want see try something else.
>>
>>133709621
>>133709755
>>133709804
Anons, I'm disappoint. Blood Blockade Battlefront/Kekkai Sensen is a Nightow manga. He's still working on that as a bi-monthly series.
>>
>>133710704
He was supposed to make everyone else stronger. But somewhere around Volume 20 apparently either the author got tired, which didn't seem to be the case since he had a lot of ideas for prequel Regios stories, or the series got dropped by the publisher and he had to rush to wrap things up within six months of in-game story time so none of the carefully laid developments were actually used. That's why Ignasis ended up being literally nothing and the final boss was Dicks with absolutely no warning.
>>
>>133710639
But it's all good, because Felli won.

>>133710728
You're daft. He went back to working on h-manga.

>>133705519
Pic-related? Doesn't he only draw porn now?

And on the same note, Masamune Shirow.
>>
>>133705519
Tanigawa Nagaru has done his best to completely disappear off the face of Japan since going dark after releasing the last volume of Haruhi in 2013.
>>
>>133710728
Fuck that ending. I loved the humor and goofy grimdarkness, but what a shit ending.

>>133710830
That was one of the good parts of the ending, but I seriously wanted to see some more development of Dalsheyna and Sharnid, have Nina develop actual control and understanding of her abilities, and see more of what Karian did to create the Regios Alliance. I mean, he did that in six months, that's insane.
>>
>>133710878
Masamune "Black cocks and Lube" Shirow, does mostly hentai, he also did designs for Arise.
>>
>>133710905
What volume is that? I dropped the series because it took too long to continue after Yuki caught the Japanese cold. I read spoilers saying that Kyon confessed to Haruhi or something.
>>
>>133710704
W-what? That sounds funny and sad at the same time.
>>
>>133710873
>filth

Manabe's h-manga are great, anon. You're missing out.

>>133710878
Fucking Hiroe, man. That guy needs to stop stalling and get back to Black Lagoon. Shirow does porn, yeah, but he's also work with Rikudou on Ghost Urn, albeit only the story and storyboards.
>>
>>133710931
>Did the designs for Arise
The only ones that looks like Shirow's work are Kurtz, the American supercyborg spy in movie 2 and that terrorist commander in movie 3.
>>
>>133710956
His very existence is a joke so it's okay to laugh at him.
>>
>>133710937
During the mountain incident? That was Rampage, which is volume 5. He did up to volume 10 (which was released as two novels, technically).

Then we've been left hanging ever since. No word from him or his editor.
>>
>>133710956
It doesn't come across that way when you read it in broken English. It's just sort of all the characters but Layfon start growing and developing while he's stuck in a slump because his waifu and childhood friend rejected him. And then the series rushes to its end and he doesn't really do much on his own any more and works with others because the enemies are just that strong.
>>
>>133711018
No, the second time, when it was the Crossdimensional Entity or whatever that thing that isn't the Integrated Data Thought Entity. The cliffhanger ending.
>>
>>133711057
I think that may have either been Intrigues (vol.7) where Mikuru is kidnapped, or Dissociation (vol.9) which introduces Suou (the terminal for that thing).
>>
>>133711154
Yeah, there we go. Dissassociation.

So, volume 10 is just an abrupt ending, huh. Is he not working on other projects? Does it feel like he's just tired of Haruhi?
>>
>>133711199
Not so much an abrupt ending. It finishes the plotlines from Dissociation and the following volumes, but there's still plenty left and didn't wrap up overarching plots.

Kind of just a status-quo ending that hints at more to come. Popular rumor seems to be that Tanigawa is in a major writing slump and can't seem to motivate himself to work on anything.

It's pretty evident from all of his afterwords that he was constantly stressed and tired. He's also incredibly self-deprecating.
>>
>>133711275
So it sounds like Haruhi just isn't doing it for him. Maybe he should take a break and play some vidya.
>>
I wonder how many promising series and careers have been ended by "sickness." Is it actually people getting sick, or is this like Konami saying people go on "vacation" rather than get fired?
>>
>>133711459
Terrible working environments and unhealthy lifestyles that lead to serious health/mental health problems. That and major burnout which leads to zero motivation.

It's a shitty Japanese culture thing.
>>
>>133711493
What's with that? I read Buichi Terasawa, when he was an assistant for Tezuka would work with the guy for 24 hours straight, is /a/ willing to sacrifice weekly manga for these guys to be treated like human beings?
>>
Among artists, I no lnoger hear much from Range Murata and Tony Taka. They used to be so prolific.
>>
>>133711562
It's not just weekly manga. Otherwise American comics would have the same problem.

Part of it is just how backwards the Japanese technology is. Most of them still hand-draw everything, which slows them down, and they don't really build up reserves of chapters. Also, Japanese assistants tend not to take vacations or cover for the main artists, which is what happens often in American comics to prevent burn-out. But even more, it's the social work ethic. If you don't work your ass off, they regard you as lazy. If you ask for a day off, you're impudent. If you take a full hour off for lunch then you're a bad apple dragging down the company.
>>
>>133711615
Murata did come back for Last Exile. Tony Taka is almost exclusively VNs now, though supposedly he's also on the Shining video game series.
>>
Tony Takezaki, he did A.D. Police and Genocyber.
>>
>>133711615
>>133711668
Last Exile's getting a movie now, so he'll probably be back again.
>>
I know Watsuki is still around, but I can barely feel his presence.
