I agree, the problem with Z was that they lost the quirkiness of dragonball

They just focused on family life and training, they lost their sense of adventure and mystique.
It honestly would have been better if was the new crew exploring space and happening upon weird planets. (A less shitty version of GT)
Also one piece really isn't that that bad if you've just kept to the manga; it can get stale for maybe a chapeter or two, but it always comes back.
Another great thing about one piece is that everybody can do something.
I had that phase of hating DBZ because it became too popular when I was around 14, 15.
Then I stopped caring about being a hipster, re-read all of the manga, re-watched all of Dragon Ball and DBZ again and fell in love again. And I still like it.
The only way I could understand people not liking it is if they were only exposed to the american dub with the nu metal soundtrack and censorship.

I would have preffered it if they did Trunks' timeline and kept it that way. had all the androids (including movie ones) and then had him go on an adventure to fuck them up one by one until the end.

The original Dragon Ball anime was awesome as well.
DBZ started pretty good, then it went down in quality around Namek.
I never liked Kai because I felt the editing was cheap, and it actually isn't like the manga, it still retains some of the filler, and it doesn't even keep the good filler (Gohan's training episodes at the beginning of DBZ, or driving lesson episode).
Super Butoden 2 on Super Famicom is still one of my favorites.
Who thought it would be a good idea to air Z in the west before the original? That's like releasing Star Wars: Episodes IV-VI before the first three.

By "west" you mean North America, right? Latin america got all of Dragon Ball before DBZ in the mid 90s. Europe was getting the anime and manga shortly after Japan, DB and DBZ were really big in countries like Spain, France and Italy and they were already broadcasting DBZ on TV by 1993 or so.
Harmony Gold (the people behind Robotech) actually tried to get Dragon Ball popular in the US in the late 80s/early 90s.
In that early dub, Goku was called Zero, and Yamcha was called Redacki. I think they only did the first 10 episodes or so, it failed, don't know the details.
I remember the US had DBZ edited on VHS in the mid to late 90s, I think they got the Saiyan saga covered but not much else.
It wasn't until CN got DBZ broadcasted on Toonami in the early 00s that DBZ got popular in the US, right?

The only reason people praise the first anime is because they haven't watched it in years. If they tried actually watching it they'd realize it's just another shitty Toei adaptation with terrible pacing and filler that doesn't make any sense.

Here's my theory:
Pan did not age as fast due to the space journey for the dragonballs in GT. It's like Gunbuster or Hoshi no Koe, but on a much smaller scale. For Pan, the journey took maybe a couple of months, but on earth a few years have passed, which is why Bra, who spent all that time on earth aged more.
