Not really. Goku gets his ass kicked a lot throughout the series. Off the top of my head:
>Loses to Jackie Chun in first Tenkaichi
>Loses to Tenshinhan in second Tenkaichi
>Has to sacrifice himself so Piccolo can kill Raditz
>Loses to Vegeta and Krillin/Gohan/Yajirobe have to beat him
>Loses to 19 and 20 and Vegeta has to fight them off
>Loses to Cell and Gohan has to beat him
He doesn't have anywhere near the best track record.

To be fair Gohan Goten and trunks are basically the main characters for 60% of the buu saga.
It starts with Gohan training Goten
Goten and trunks battle in the World Tournament
Gohan fights Dabura and Buu. (gets whooped)
Goten and Trunks become the focal point of Babidi's rage and have to learn the fusion dance to defeat him.
Gotenks fights Buu both in the time chamber and outside of the Time chamber
Then Gohan fights Super Buu.
Almost every fight Buu has for the first half of the arc is against them. Goku and vegeta only came in at the end and even then they couldn't beat Buu without fusing into vegito
Goku and Vegeta would've literally been unable to beat buu if Mr. Satan didn't convince every human on earth to give Goku More than enough energy for the spirit bomb, which is the only reason it was powerful enough to defeat him.
