Can be, but RAID 1 can usually (depending on the controller) be split into individual drives. Most controllers treat RAID 1 as multiple independent drives that simply copy each other, so they can be split/moved to new systems as needed.

RAID 1 is a literal backup. You don't even need to RAID it, just make yourself a damn backup.
RAID 5 is entry level territory.
