I'm guessing it's similar to how things are in the UK. Snow is quite unpredictable here; sometimes we get none and sometimes we get quite a lot. Because it's so hit and miss, our government doesn't bother investing in infrastructure to deal with snow because it's cheaper and easier to basically just SHUT DOWN EVERYTHING for a few days until it goes away.
>>
>>133652273
Japan has a couple of climate zones, even excluding Okinawa.
You have all year winter Hokkaido. Tokyo and Kansai regions with blazing hot summers. And iirc Kyushuu etc is subtropical.
>>
>>133652273
I usually associate it with the weather in New England

Same here, we haven't had a lot of snow in my city for the last 10 years or so. A few centimeter for a few days max.

You do realize snow and ice buildup will fuck with the conductor rail or overhead lines on an electric train, right? Running the train under those conditions runs the risk of losing power to the whole train or blowing an entire line. The time, resource and maintainence costs of shutting a train line down for a while vastly outweighs the costs of it fucking up.

I'm planning to buy a cabin in the middle of the woods pretty far north when I have enough passive income so that I can sustain myself when it comes to power, food and internet. Part of the fear with driving is, in fact, other people. Even if you trust your own skills, you can't trust everyone else's, and snow makes that ten times worse, especially on the highway with dipshits who go 65 even if the roads are pure slush. Plus the other stuff that comes with winter, like black ice. Also I'm poor and can't afford snow tires.

Unfortunately, other drivers ARE retards. Had a snow plow dumper nearly take out my WRX, only avoided getting hit by intentionally getting sideways. And that's just one instance of stupid people driving in snow. WRX can be lots of fun, in the snow, but it's still incredibly limited. Don't let the picture fool you. Go into an open field, feel every bump from the not so smooth surface and you'll understand. Shredding the fuck out of a soccer field covered with a couple inch of snow sure is fun tho. Not the guy you responded to, but it's pretty obvious that you're not really used to actually driving in the snow.
There's a huge difference in driving, and sliding around a parking lot.

It's clear you don't know how to drive in snow. You know what usually comes with snow? Minus degrees.
You know what happens to wet roads when there's minus degrees? Ice.

I've been driving for about 4 years in this job. I know how to drive a car, and I know for a fact it's more dangerous to be on the road with snow.

People don't understand how region-centric most of the shit foreigners see of Japan is. That fucking kotatsu that's in every goddamn winter episode of anime ever produced isn't even "Japanese" culture, it's just a Honshu and primarily Kanto thing. Hokkaido residents will literally never see one because they have actual fucking household heating.

Japan's climate is almost exactly like the US east coast; lots of humidity with occasional hurricanes (or typhoons in moonspeak).

Hokkaido is at the latitutde of New England so its climate is like that; Kyushu is at the latitude of Georgia. Tokyo is at about the level of North Carolina, so yeah, a relatively small amount of snow freaks them out.

"heavy snowfall" in this context just means "a large enough volume in a short enough span of time that it impaired the function of transit before the appropriate services could be mobilized to clear it.

In this case, the rails of the train got covered, which make it unsafe conditions to operate until such a time that they can salt and clear them.

Certain places on the planet are not built to withstand certain conditions.

In my neck of the woods a half foot of snow and near zero degrees temperatures would be a world ending catastrophe. I'm dead serious. But a foot of rain is a mere inconvenience

In NewYork a foot of snow and near subzero temperature is just an average winter. But a few feet of rain would be like noahs flood and fuck everything.

DRESS IN MOTHERFUCKING LAYERS

My old roommate was Saudi, first winter in boston in one of the snowiest winters on record. He bought a single really expensive snowcoat, a pair of boots, and glove and a hat. He thought that'd be enough.

It wasn't.

Have long sleeve shirts, cover with sweater or sweatshirt, cover with jacket. If it's less than 10 degrees outside, or if you're going to spend more than an hour outside, wear your pajamas under your pants as long underwear. Add an extra sweater layer in between if it's below 0. And if anything gets really wet, change it as soon as possible.

Basically this. City infrastructure and services are built to deal with whatever problems are common, and aren't built to deal with ones that are rare.

A city where snowfall is uncommon won't spend taxpayer money and municipal budget to maintain a proper fleet of snowplows.

My first two years there were warm, just like how this winter is shaping up. Although the snowfall amounts felt about normal the previous two years, it was awfully fucking cold. You'll get blizzards and frigid cold temps in your time there anon, don't you worry. Hope you have a massive backlog when that comes, cause you won't want to go outside after a month of subzero temps.

The best. And winter gives me time to actually work on the backlog and other hobbies, during summer, if it's more than 5C I'm generally outside. One of my favourite things about Canada; we actually get seasons, as opposed to 'slightly hotter' and 'slightly wetter'. Each season lets you appreciate the others more.
