So I'm currently studying Japanese at one of the top Tokyo universities.

Last term I had four courses: comprehesive which consisted of memorising a textbook chapter per night and then doing mind numbing "games" for 3 hours, in between being retaught the chapter we had already learnt and had been tested on first thing. This course completely ignored kanji, yet worked through N5/4. The next course was kanji, which consisted of being given a random list of about 50 words to memorise and learn to write each week, with no instruction as to radicals, stroke order or any sensical kanji learning order. Note, these words had no relation to the comprehensive course. The last two "theme" courses consisted of lists of theme words to memorise each week, also with random kanji.

This term: more comprehensive, where we work through a textbook in class. Fair enough, but it's at a much slower pace than I could do it by myself. This course also expects you to know kanji that wasn't taught in the previous comprehensive course. More theme classes, all as useless as last term.

In additon, as it is a university, there are advanced students taking beginner/lower intermediate classes just for the credits. This means that everyone taking the correct level is left feeling dumb and too shy to speak out in class. Not a great learning atmosphere.

Honestly, I was really close to not coming back for my second term. My university is costing double what a regular language school would. I really wish I had just gone to a regular school.

I took a language course for a different language previously in my home country at university. We spent the classes going through level appropriate native videos, audio files and working through the textbook. The class moved at a good pace.

Has anyone else taken a university course here in Japan and felt the same way? Am I just expecting too much?

こんにちは

I'm (trying to) learn Kanji by vocab, but sometimes I feel that the don't get the right amount of words for this, sometimes it seens too few, and sometimes to much. (If something like this exists)

For example I list like 50 words that use 「日」Kanji and feel odd by using like 4 for 「五」it makes me feel weird, (one character have tons~ of words, and some almost to none), (I'm doing a Anki core, to some words are good, but I cant remember some because I don't even know all Kanji in the expression)

I know that is good to take real Japanese media (I watch anime read manga, but idk some ppl says that its not a good viable method of adquiring vocab)to get the frequent words, but I only know NHK, Asahi and Nikkei (Can someone recommend something more or maybe something more begineer friendly)?

So, how to know if I'm good enough in a certain character to going progress to other?

You have by far the best tool for learning Japanese available to you: Being in Japan.

Go out, meet Japanese people, talk to people in Japanese etc.
What you do in school is almost irrelevant in comparison.

If I was in Japan my strategy for learning Japanese would be, spend my mornings grinding vocab because there's just so many fucking words you need to know. Then I'd spend afternoons and evenings out and about, talking to anyone who's willing to talk to me, which should be a lot of people because you're an exotic gaijin and if nothing else they want to practice their English on you.

Why finding raw manga is so much harder than scanlations? It's never a problem with games and anime but finding manga I want to read is always such a pain in the butt.

Manga is fine. Your personal interest vocabulary actually ends up driving itself. If you like to read sci-fi, you'll end up learning a lot of sci-fi related words that will make reading more easier.

Pretty much the only difference between /r/learnjapanese and DJT is that DJT generally prefers tae kim while that sub generally prefers Genki. The general rationale for tae kim is very commonly posted so you can make up your own mind whether you prefer one or the other.

The only person I can think of that has much say from reddit that disagrees with using VNs for reading practice is OfficerKondo, but that's forgiven because he hates RTK so his worldview is consistent.

I've seen plenty of videos of gaijins having to swat away the hordes of Japanese people coming up to them like "ハロー、ハゥアーユー?"

Like what? Aside from the Anki drone meme (most people here past the complete beginner stage just use it as a supplement to reading) and Genki vs Tae Kim because that shit doesn't matter and both are supported here even if Tae Kim is preferred.
>>
>>133648213
Perfect Dark is a distributed data store with scarcity prevention capabilities built in. This means that remotely popular files are forcibly mirrored across the network, onto peoples' machines, without them initiating the download. Occasionally, people use Perfect Dark for extremely illegal things. This means that there exist on the network extremely illegal files that can be forcibly uploaded to your computer by the network's AI.

Perfect Dark uses an extremely good encryption model to make it as hard as possible to track down downloaders, but it's proprietary software, so it can't be audited for correctness.

It clearly implies there's an order of difficulty among those options and that people advance through it as they progress.
>>

One thing is that the automatic partial distribution behavior actually helps protect your privacy because it makes traffic interpretation much more difficult/

>>
>>133648469
No, you're really just reading too much into it. If it really bothers you that much, though here:

http://strawpoll.me/6032231
Note to autists: This poll is not implying that you should progress in order or that you cannot skip a "level" or two. It is just asking what level content you are currently reading / capable of reading.

>Could you actually get into legal trouble over that though?
You only host parts of the encrypted file and it can't be decrypted without putting it together with the other parts.
There's no way to prove that random scrambled bits of files on your disk are parts of cheese pizza, even if they actually are.
>>
>>133648531
...did the sarcasm in that post really go over your head?

I was making fun of you for setting up mpv to add "mpv" to your screenshot filenames so you could show off that you used it, as though it was something impressive.
>>
>>133648604
Still implies there's an order of difficulty. The very idea that those are "levels" is retarded to begin with.
>>
>>133648653
>There's no way to prove that random scrambled bits of files on your disk are parts of cheese pizza, even if they actually are.
Except if an agent downloads the file and parts happen to come from your IP

Hence using a VPN

>>133648684
That's the default behavior.
>>
>>133648591
The thing is, even if you just view a CP image it gets downloaded to your computer so you're technically in posession if it.

However whether that will actually get you convicted or even charged with something depends on way too many factors to post about here, like local laws, how the judge is feeling that particular day. Basically you're breaking a blanket law that they could get you for, but probably don't in most cases.

So saying you're immune to CP posted on 4chan/whatever is dishonest.

It's just a quick simple poll to gauge peoples' progress, and listing content that is easier/harder on average compared to the other options is an easy way to do that. You're REALLY reading too much into it, but whatever helps you win your "argument". If it genuinely bugs you that much, then make a better poll and post it.

I've been thinking, and I remember a video where Steve said that his Japanese was still improving after 9 years in Japan. I thought, yeah okay, of course, sometimes I improve my English and I'm a native. But what if he didn't mean it like that? >simple dialogue

I know the example you posted might not be that guilty in this respect, but a lot of what makes simple dialogue so seemingly simple is conceptually some of the most finnicky and complex aspects of the language.

You know, like colloqualisms, contractions, ellipses, indirect references, idiosyncratic speech patterns, intentional omissions (and/or hanging particles, unfinished sentences), equivocations, double entendres, insinuations, direct assertion avoidance, not to mention the way sentence patterns can become simultaneously more and more ambiguous and more and more complex as someone begins by struggling to articulate exactly what they want to say and eventually arrives at an appropriate determination by retroactively modifying the earlier clauses (there's probably a precise lingusitic term for this somewhere but I can't be bothered).

Turns out it can be pretty hard

So I'm totally new to this. Don't know any more Japanese than anime has taught me over the years. I've started with learning with this guide: http://www.guidetojapanese.org/grammar_guide.pdf
For the moment, I'm trying to learn to read/write Hiragana. It's going decently, I suppose, I've been trying to do learn some new kanji every day.
I'm wondering, though: is Japanese itself difficult? Like the tenses, or the vocabulary, things like that?

You CANNOT learn Japanese.
>>
>>133653254
I learnt from anime. Japanese itself is easy, the only hard part is kanji. Vocab takes time but isn't exactly hard, just like with every other language
>>
Do you think it's possible to learn Japanese in 4 years with 2 hours of practice a day Monday to Saturday and 3 hours a day Saturday and Sunday, as well as a month's visit to Japan each year?

I know I should be practising rather than thinking about it, but I just want to know if it's a reasonable goal. I'll be at university for 4 years and if I want to bag a graduate job in Japan I'll need "native fluency".

That'll be plenty, as long as you study efficiently. (read, flashcards, good grammar guides, etc; not Rosetta stone). Just be sure you're actually spending the full 2 hours studying, and not studying for 30 minutes with 90 minutes of mind wandering
>>

Most likely yes, four years is a lot of time

Not really. I've heard it doesn't have a future tense, which is one thing less to learn. Don't think any grammar can be as bizarre as the optativus obliquus they shoved down my throat in middle school, but was curious.
Can't really judge on the difficulty so far, though. Only on hiragana so far. Plus I imagine anime Japanese is different from 'actual' Japanese.

There you go. You can change your opinion any time if you find it to be actually difficult.

Personally, I never considered Japanese horribly difficult. It's more a matter. It's mainly a matter of effort and time, but not something more difficult than learning any other language.
>>
>>133653385
By that logic nobody can ever learn any second language unless they live in a native environment for 18 years, which is funny because I know how to read, write, speak and listen to English even though I've only been to an English speaking country once and only stayed there for a week.

>>
>>133653683
Yeah, according to the department of defense it takes five times longer to reach a level of proficiency in Japanese as it takes to reach the same level in Spanish.

I guess this depends on how you define difficulty. In this case it's just how long it takes to reach a level of proficiency.
>>
>>133653533
>Plus I imagine anime Japanese is different from 'actual' Japanese.
It's roughly as different as anime dubs English is from 'actual' English. People speak faster, they sound more slurred and there is more use of slang, but it's fundamentally the same. If you practice listening from anime, listening to people actually talking might be a bit challenging, but nothing compared to how challenging it was to get used to listening to anime in the first place. Source, somebody who went through that exact experience.

Dialects on the other hand...

I think it's reasonable to assume that the vast majority of anons speak some mixture of English and European languages that are more or less related to English, so it's not a stretch to claim that for the average anon, Japanese and Chinese will be the hardest languages to learn. Assuming the DoJ has any idea what they are talking about.
>>

I'm kind of confused at when 上手 should be used.

Core gives an example as
>いもうとは歌うが上手です
>My sister can sing well

So let's say I want to say "I can write songs well."
>僕は曲を作る出来る "I can write songs."
How would I say I do this action well? 上手 or すごく? Do you ever use すごく to refer to your actions?

I've only recently started so please excuse me if I'm being an idiot.

You just wrote two verbs right after one another. You gotta use potential form. できる is just the potential form of する.

Their metric for their estimated difficulty comes from observing their students, people who study 8+ hours a day +immersion + native speaker input and may already know several languages. The real estimate of difficulty is even higher for an anon on here, but ultimately it comes down to how well they're teaching in the first place to arrive at that conclusion.

>You gotta use potential form
>僕は曲を作れる

Is that all? I don't need any sort of verb declaring I'm doing said verb? Though I guess two verbs is kind of redundant.

I haven't gotten to potential conjugation yet, so this is good to learn.

The correct answer is: 僕は曲を作ることがすごく上手です。
「すごく」is a modifier that increases the potency of the following word, eg. すごく好き、すごく高い、すごく甘い。Really like, really high, really sweet.
Also no one will ever say 僕は曲を作ることがすごく上手です in Japan because it makes them sound like a pretentious dick.

I'm not entirely sure what you're saying, but as I understand it
>僕は
Sets "I"/"Me" as the topic.
>曲を作るのが
の encapsulates "曲を作る" and essentially turns that phrase into a noun which can then be described. が then identifies that phrase as the thing which you are skilled at (上手です。).

See the section about の here for a better explanation:

Very well, I begin to cipher out the German for that answer. I begin at the wrong end, necessarily, for that is the German idea. I say to myself, "Regen (rain) is masculine -- or maybe it is feminine -- or possibly neuter -- it is too much trouble to look now. Therefore, it is either der (the) Regen, or die (the) Regen, or das (the) Regen, according to which gender it may turn out to be when I look. In the interest of science, I will cipher it out on the hypothesis that it is masculine. Very well -- then the rain is der Regen, if it is simply in the quiescent state of being mentioned, without enlargement or discussion -- Nominative case; but if this rain is lying around, in a kind of a general way on the ground, it is then definitely located, it is doing something -- that is, resting (which is one of the German grammar's ideas of doing something), and this throws the rain into the Dative case, and makes it dem Regen. However, this rain is not resting, but is doing something actively, -- it is falling -- to interfere with the bird, likely -- and this indicates movement, which has the effect of sliding it into the Accusative case and changing dem Regen into den Regen." Having completed the grammatical horoscope of this matter, I answer up confidently and state in German that the bird is staying in the blacksmith shop "wegen (on account of) den Regen." Then the teacher lets me softly down with the remark that whenever the word "wegen" drops into a sentence, it always throws that subject into the Genitive case, regardless of consequences -- and that therefore this bird stayed in the blacksmith shop "wegen des Regens."

N. B. -- I was informed, later, by a higher authority, that there was an "exception" which permits one to say "wegen dem Regen" in certain peculiar and complex circumstances, but that this exception is not extended to anything but rain.

How is it just a "supplement"? It is the best way to remember words including pronunciation and writing, as well as new kanji. Assuming you don't have severe retention problems with brute forcing vocab (or at least learning kanji radicals/components and being able to differentiate similar looking kanji) and you go through Tae Kim / whatever grammar resource you pick fast enough, you could probably be reading really easy moege and/or doujins in around a few months with heavy assistance from a dictionary / text hooker, but you probably will still run into trouble here and there.
