I preferred the first few volumes set in Punpun's childhood when it was more of a black comedy with a cute aesthetic than later on when it was more of a gritty drama, I still enjoyed it all the way through though.

The entire Apocalyptic plot point in the second half felt really fucking stupid and unnecessary. I get that it parallels the main story at points but to have an end of the world plot in what's supposed to be a dramatic coming-of-age story felt out of place.

I don't think the end of the world shit was bad at first, but I disliked how it amounted pretty much to nothing in the end. I was expecting it to tie up with Punpun's plot in some amazing ways but nope, nothing like that. I felt like he was trying to fill up the manga with something he had no idea how to carry on properly.
I think it's a good manga to recommend people who are interested in going a little deeper into manga than the usual mainstream stuff, as an example of a series that's geared to an older audience. There are other seinen series I like more than Punpun but they're also the type that have content that would throw readers off if they aren't used to it.

Yeah, it kind of just tapered out. I do like how punpun turning into a tetrahedron when he had his biggest emotional breakdown tied in with what the cultist said about a tetrahedron being one of the strongest shapes and defenses. That was cool.
But overall I thought the end was nice, it showed poignantly how Punpun will never get the thing he wants most; to be left alone. And from any other view point, he looks happy and content with life, but far from it. It's true for anybody actually. You always see that successful dude on the street but his life probably has a lot of stress and woe.

SInce obviously it wasn't planned, the whole section has no real connection with the main storyline except for some last-minute adjustments and the fact that there are some Punpun's old time friends... not related to his storyline anymore.
Wanna see a bad digression that actually felt necessary? Shigurui's frog-man + lady penis arc. Completely crazy and unnecessary on the plot level, but still necessary to break the pacing before the conclusion of the main story.
Good vibrations, instead, doesn't break the narrative for the good (in this work there's no need) but simply shows up.

pretentious 2deep4you shit. Read half of it until put it on-hold for a year or two. Read it further after that but only 30-40 Chapter until the next break. Not really an enjoyable read but I will finish it up at some point because I've already invested so much time in it.

All he's ever striven for in life is to be completely alone and not worry about hurting anyone, so after not only killing his childhood crush, he finally comes to the realization with Sachi's kid that he will never in fact, get to be alone.
