The first season was very exciting if you overlook the Mao subplot and the terrible drama whore that is Shirley. The second was for the most part a complete mess who seemed to only be concerned about introducing new characters no one cared about and turning the whole things into meme time.

Lelouche Lamperouge falls in love with Suzaku Kururugi.

He is the Honorary Britanian's alternate universe counterpart, who has fallen in love with Rurushu's own AU self, who too is blissfully unaware of his crush.
Hijinks ensue as the two strike up a deal to give each other their darkest, most private secrets in order to equip the other with the weapons they need to conquer the heart of their other selves. While the two chase their respective loved ones, DRAMA ensues as they begin to fall in love with each other instead and question the NATURE of JIBUN WO.

The purpose of writing is to entertain. Writing is good or bad depending on whether it does good or bad at fulfilling that purpose. If a lot of people liked something and were entertained by it, by definition it can't be bad.
I've rewatched R1/R2 six times now, still the best roller coaster anime that I've found, and my favorite. Steins;Gate is arguably better written and just as fun (my second favorite thriller), but CG is so consistently good over 50 episodes.

I understand that at a glance most people would compare Code Geass to Death Note, but anyone who actually watched both should realize that they are completely different in nature.
DN is fully concentrated on its plot n' twists (it does execute them very well, admittedly) to the point that the characters have the depht of a puddle on a hot summer.
CG however, while it has its fair share of plot thickness, it's the characters and their developments that are the true meat of the show. Even a character like Nina (even if she's still one of the most unlikeble persons of the show) got a pretty great amount of development.
Comparing Lelouch's character and Light "I wanna be god because I'm smart (and that's literally it)" Yagami's is almost laughable.CG is the better show by a landslide.

I vaguely remember reading interviews where they explained the uneven pacing in the first half of R2 was due to a timeslot change. They had to add scenes so new viewers wouldn't get lost and that meant they had to drop subplots to make the time to explain shit.
