Barbatos is not a "super weapon Gundam Freedom i kill fleets" type of mecha. At least yet.
Its 300 years old outdated machine, that is inferior to the new ones, with lack of weaponry, barely working twin reactors and untuned.
The girl was winning, since unlike Barbatos - which is all-purpose suit, she was in a new model, that seem specifically fitted for space battle. I.e. not even proper mech, but space intercepter like say Striker/Sillhuete thus lot higher than bipedal mechas speed and maneuverebility in space.
Only advantage of Mika is implanted control system, but all it did for him was basically not allow to puke himself during all the maneuvres here.
Barbatos has potential to become truly powerful, but for that needs lots and lots upgrades, and some new weaponry - atm its armed like poorfag.

The battle was exciting since both sides were in real danger, and viewer sympathizes to both, fearing that either some kid pilots would die, or waifu mafia pilots - making it real battle and not "we know good guys win so theres no danger".
Okada should not forget that its Gundam show after all, so at the end of it, max 20% of cast should remain alive. This episode was pretty nice emotionally set up to include some deaths that`d not look like shit writing. Mika killing the blonde, other waifu pilots turning to hate him for that etc.

To be fair, how common could a tactic like that possibly be? The way Maruba seemed to be talking, they were only able to pull it off because of their implants. It's a tactic that's pretty much suicide unless your using people who were desperate enough to get implants like that (and from an area so poorly governed that people can get away putting those implants in to begin with) and people that low down on the pecking order ironically probably don't get a lot of work in space where those implants are arguably the most useful.
Plus they brough minimechs in with them and started hacking their systems once they got in. Any standard measures probably just wont cut it against that kind of boarding party.

Modern forces even have all the old mech specs and could build similar if wanted to. Its iconic mecha, since participated in historical events - but thats about it.
Unlike Turn A, After War etc. they did not lose technology after the conflicts, out of 300 Gundams many remained, but now only in Museums and such. Technology went ahead since then.
Same with Varya system - its not uber weapon that no one knows how to reproduce. Its not used, since too risky and modern mechas are computer assisted rather than put all strain on pilot.

The only real advantage of their unit atm are Twin reactor.
The "gundanium armor" or whatever, is used on other modern mechas too.
Speed, strength, etc. are similar or even subpar to modern.
Weaponry is subpar atm, basically Mika has to rely exclusively on Lance.
He keeps up with enemies since with intuitive piloting talent and spinal-link system his reactions are great and he controls the mech as his body.
What they need is to somehow fully utilize the twin reactor system. Either improve armor (since its not alloy, but some shielded surface powered by reactor), mobility (by upgrading thrusters and utilizing reactor power for them) or some bad ass weapon system - since power output of Barbatos > that of normal mechs.
Modern mechs dont use two AHAB reactors, since its difficult to keep them stable and parallel. Aside from power output, it also potentially allows greater maneuveribility, since they use AHAB reactor effect to create some negative particle or whatever space near the cabin, to reduce the G force effects.
Spoilers from model kits say, next upgrade they`ll get by Jupiter technics, so by Teiwaz - using old blueprints and materials from Calamity wars.

Modern ms don't use twin linked reactors because the process for creating them was lost during the calamity war and it was balls hard to do even then (which is why they only made 72 of them). The official site and model kit manuals basically spell it out for you that the gundam frame ms are better than modern ones due to tech regression at the end of the war, barbatos is just suffering performance-wise from centuries of neglect and still managed to directly overpower a modern graze in a contest of strength (the old guy was even shocked that it was able to push him back when thry were pushing against each other).

The sound effect of the Turbines Mobile Suit guns is pretty unique. That 'doot-doot' sound effect is really different from the other sounds used in Gundam. It reminds me quite a lot of the sound that the first InFamous (the PS3 game) when you block bullets from dust men golems.

Well let's be honest until the Teiwaz girls got introduced she hardly had any competition, even considering that I’m sure she will continue to get the most fanart, she it’s a main character and has screen time secure, she tends to gets in weird situation (like the corn scene) and constantly change clothes, having a sexy character design it’s just the icing on top of the cake.
Compared to the girls we have before the Teiwaz girls, Fumitan has a sexy character design, but she its extremely serious and hardly had any screen time and Atra its cute but that it’s all there its to her, her clothes are big and not really that appealing, she has decent character screen time, at least one scene per episode, but all she does its been cute or supportive and that’s hardly worthy of fanart not to mention she has next to zero sex appeal for most.
