The designs were great but the story was really messy. Doubt SHAFT can top mekaku in terms of shittiness.

Hardly. It was over-the-top and insipid at worst, but man was it a lot of crazy fun. The weekly discussion threads when new episodes came out were definitely engaging, too.
SHAFT worked on, and produced a number of lackluster adaptations in the mid-2000s though, so that is where I'd suggest you look for shows that deserve a bit of flak.
I'd say most recent disappointments from SHAFT were Mekaku and then Denpa Onna before that. Still not the worst they've done, however. I'd probably give that to Negima or He Is My Master

I do love the logic that "The Real Imperial Family is Matriarchal because the Goddess is a female". And that the official Imperial family is just a fake one for appearances. It is just so logical that it is amazing no one else thought of it. I mean, the original claim of divinity was that the ruler is the descendant of the sun goddess. Man, I had forgotten how much I liked this show. The girls were really, really cute and the character interactions were top notch. It's a shame the nonsense clusterfuck of a plot got in the way of the girls being cute whenever it reared its ugly head, but they were still really, really cute.
I feel like this series wasted a lot of potential in that the characters took a backseat to really lousy writing way too often. They characters themselves were good, and their interactions were written at least well enough to be a highlight, but those highlights were the minority, especially in the second half with heavy-handed moral speeches and asspull shinto shit taking up way too much focus.
Futa girl wasn't even all that bad, it was the evil shapeshifting one (was she a youkai? I can't even remember) that really dragged the ending into the dumpster.

It's worth giving a try at least. The plot is typical LN arc formula where there's a new 'event' every few episodes that leads to some half-assed climax and then starts over next episode. It was at its best during the few bits of slice of life early on and went to complete shit, like the kind of shit that's a chore to sit through, whenever the plot got going. The bad parts reminded me of the more insipid parts in Index, so if you sat through (or god forbid actually liked) those then this shouldn't be any more offensive.

Why does it feel like this show aired so long ago? It was only about 2 years (actually coming up on 3 in a couple of months) yet I have more vivid and immediate memories of watching Arakawa and Soremachi. It feels so weird to think of Sasami has being a 2013 show; somewhere in the back of my head I thought I'd watched it last decade, only a few short seasons removed from SZS or Maria holic.
I suppose this same sort of thing happened back at the turn of the millennium, where my mind was stuck in 2001-4 and I habitually assumed any vague memory was of something from '96, only to discover later that it was already 2009 and that show was from 2002.

Natsu no Arashi was good, it has the pre monogatari style that was pretty fun to watch.
I guess the only problem for many is the story and sol elements don't mix that well.
I'd say actually bad are mekakushitty actors, dance in the vampire bud, and maybe salami for most people.
