As someone who has been watching anime since the 80s (and actually started watching anime from the 70s because back in the pre-internet days, anime reached the west with a delay of 10 years), and who watched Evangelion when it was still sort of new in 1998, and who has watched a lot of anime since, both old and new, I can agree with OP.

but Eva is still better, Ideon drags for too long with the "monster of the week" scheme and only really gets good at the end (specifically Be Invoked is what makes Ideon be remembered).
You should also check Devil Man which was another influence for Evangelion. Has the same "monster of the week" flavor but it's still good.

How is Evagelion good?
I tried marathoning the first 5 episodes but I feel asleep by episode 3.
It's as boring as watching paint dry and the girls are average as fuck.
Better animes are stuff like the gundam series, and TTGL which are far more enjoyable, exciting, fun to rewatch again and again and have much hotter girls

Back when I was watching Evangelion on VHS and reached the ending, I liked it, but I felt a sort of incomplete-ness, I didn't feel satisfied until I watched EoE, and I'm sure it was the same way for the japanese audience back in the day.
I also watched D&R before I could lay my hands on a copy of a copy of a fansub of EoE, the waiting was killing me, but it was worth it.

Your level of personal satisfaction has nothing to do with the fact that you CAN make a judgement of Evangelion after watching the TV-series, it being the de facto finale of the TV-series.
In itself, you claiming you're disappointed is a judgment, so it's obvious you're wrong.
What you're proposing is that you can't judge e.g A New Hope of Star Wars because there may or not be sequels.
Look into Rebuild and look at what it does. It's transparent and pretending you can't judge it yet isn't something you can do.

I only watched the Rebuild movies once or twice each and don't remember much of it other than the major things. I can say I enjoyed the production values like the animation and the music, but I'm not sure about the pacing or the script, people bitch about the 3rd one, but I was already weirder from the first one where suddenly there's Kaworu on the moon, or the 2nd one with that girl Mary (who is her, anyway?).
As I said, so far, I didn't like Rebuild better than the original. But they're pretty to look at, I should rewatch them to form a stronger opinion.
In contrast I've watched NGE+EoE at least a few dozens of times.

No, it wasn't you idiot. In fact Eva was the series to inspire a stream of original tv anime and that's why the best tv shows are post 95. There was a weaker period around the end of the 90s and beginning of the 00s because creators were still working on making digital coloring look good, just after they've mastered cel coloring in the 80/90s and quickly abandoned it.
Name me one original tv anime that wasn't supported by some toy franchise from before Eva.
