You'd think they'd be more common, considering the sheer number of depressed NEETs out there.

I mean, sure, there's SZS and Eva, but you'd expect one per season at least.

Anime is escapism, why watch a show about depression when you can just turn of the computer and listen to your own thoughts?

Also, while mental illness can make for a good subject matter, making it good is extremely difficult. There are creative ways, then there are ways in which the character just sits there and tells you how depressed they are, which rarely makes for interesting situations, and can make the character come across as boring, whiny and unlikeable. Just like real life

Also, Japan likes to sweep mental illness under the carpet.

A lot of times meds just end up making people worse or even make them addicted and unable to live without their fix. Its a disgusting scam

>>
>>133558583
That is a pretty huge generalisation. Meds can have an enormous positive impact, but too many psychiatrists are way to eager to prescribe them.
Facing your problems head on is important, but a lot of mental illness can't be treated with just that.
>>
>>133558398
Yes, that was my point. It's a bit different over here where things like Weeds or Breaking Bad become prime time hits. We're more open about talking about mental illnesse here too, so maybe it's different.

Also, the mass media is securely in the pocket of big pharma and making people stupid and ineffective is the goal.
>>
>>133558583
>The only way to fix your problems is to face them head-on
We wouldn't have any crazy people if they could actually do that. Most of the time that's exactly the solution but the people simply can't do it, meds help to some extent.
>>
>>133558587
Super autism?
>>
>>133558583
>>133558669
I reckon you have neither any actual knowledge on the subject nor have ever taken anti kind of anti-depressants.

Seriously, just because doctors and pharmaceutical companies push for people to take meds when they don't need it doesn't mean there aren't people who actually need it. In fact they do the same shit to all kinds of meds and procedures.
>>
>>133558583
Meds aren't supposed to be a cure. They give people the boost they need to "face their problems head-on".

A lot of people simply aren't capable of fixing their problems by themselves.
>>
>>133558724
Japan jusz doesn't have a drug culture like most western countries. Not saying people don't do them, it just isn't a part of media and everyday life.

So don't stop taking them. "But you're dependant on them", you might say. To which I say, so what? I'm dependant on drinking water and eating food in order to live, and dependant on clothing to keep from freezing or sustaining other damage from the environment. If I were to have a leg amputated, I'd be dependant on crutches, or a wheelchair, or a prosthetic to be mobile. Why is it necessarily wrong to be dependant on anti-depressants to function?

>>
There are characters that usually deal with some sort of mental illness or something right? They never diagnose them in the show, but it's pretty evident?

In Ao Haru Ride the main male love interest was going through depression.

In Death Note L, Near, and Mello were all autistic.

In Aldonoah Zero that soldier had PTSD and that was kinda the basis for Ghost Hound.

In Welcome to the NHK and other multiple shows they deal with NEETs and Hikkis.

In Japan I think they are still trying to raise awareness about autism, no? I mean it might take some time before mental illness becomes a thing? Just how no one really talks about STIs either.

Every Satoshi Kon work
>>
>>133567729
I think Kon's work is less about illness and more just the natural human condition where we all live multiple lives and have multiple facets to our persons that may make us seem like many different people in one body.

Also surprised NHK was only mentioned once before itt when it's such low hanging fruit.

They have a fucking screw loose. Normal kids don't do the insane shit ADD (god forbid ADHD) case kids do. Normal kids don't jump off shit in the classroom for kicks because the others egged them on to the point their hype went off the charts.

Its development certainly started there after KS was released and they wanted their website to make their own vn with disabled girls.

Not at all. They were born with a condition where their necks are too thin to support their massive heads and will certainly snap if they ever get out of bed.

So they stay in bed and live a happy life, if only we could all be so lucky.

Why are you guys focusing on the low-tier mental illnesses? Sure, depression can be crippling, but that certainly did not make Shinji a fun character to watch.

Shit like schizophrenia and bipolar could make for a brutal ride. Psychosis and delusions open up options for fantasy in settings they would otherwise be shut out of, with conflicts between what is real and what is hallucinated. Not being able to tell what is real and what is in your head really screws with a person's worldview.

Unfortunately, severe mental illness is even more of a turn-off for audiences. Every time you see it it's explained away somehow.

Came in just to say this. Psychosis is a powerful narrative device.

Horror anime with a schizophrenic protagonist anyone?

>Psychosis is a powerful narrative device.
It can also be a way to make a very one dimensional character who does whatever they do for the sole reason that they're insane.

Also can be a way of making an anime just seem nonsensical and random. Even the best anime that use psychosis or delirium can tend towards this.

Take Paprika (Kon's best work) for instance:

>Even the five court ladies danced in sync to the frog's flutes and drums. The whirlwind of recycled paper was a sight to see. It was like computer graphics. That I don't support Technicolor parfaits and snobby petit bourgeois is common knowledge in Oceania! Now is the time to return home to the blue sky! The confetti will dance around the shrine gates. The mailbox and the refrigerator will lead the way! Anyone who cares about expiration dates will not get in the way of the glory train! They need to fully realize the lives of the triangle rulers! Now, this festival was decided by the third grade class with the telephoto camera! Move forward! Come together! I am the ultimate governor!

The screenplay for Magnetic Rose really is great, though, minus some of Kon's trademark too-clever, on-the-nose lines. And it's not like Koji Morimoto is some hack director who couldn't do it justice. I might even argue that he's better than Kon in a lot of ways.

There's a pretty good amount of series that portray certain types of psych issues, most just use it as a part of characterization rather than giving it a specific named illness and centering the entire story on it.

You usually won't get a substantial focus on that kind of thing unless you go full blown psychosis tier, which I'd really like to see done in the tasteful japanese style.
