Kirei was always fucked up. His entire character is built around him trying to overcome his twisted personality through just ignoring it and throwing himself into his work. All Gil did was show him that he is much happier if he just embraced it.
His wife that they mentioned who died before zero he only married to see if it would affect him and make him a better person. When he found out she was dead his only thought was how sad he was he wasnt able to kill her himself. The same thought he had with his father when he found him.

Different dude. F/SN is not a perfect show, there are a lot of flaws. Mainly the drop off in the 2nd half, the budget was prioritized for the first half and it showed. Lots of key information was left out that shrouded the real understanding of Shirou as a character and his development. These are just some of the first things that come to mind, there is quite a lot more.

There really was a drop off in quality though, a real massive one that stood out like a sore thumb. Im quite anal when it comes to visual things being a graphic artist so changes in visuals is very obvious. The main differences is that the fight scenes in the 00 and 01 were done so beautifully that the made the fights in the 2nd half look amateur. There was a lot of the fast paced movements that were done quite lazily and the detail quality started to drop in the last 4 episodes (especially when they were fighting in UBW) that you could see that they did not even draw the faces on the characters from afar, or even animate moving facials in dialogue.
Overall i was quite impressed but i think the budget could have been juggled a lot better instead of overspending on 00 to show off before airing the first half.
