I should watch more shoujoshit so that I can better flesh my problem with it, particularly ones with a heavy focus on romance and this kind of writing style. There's just something about the way that the male characters are written that makes them completely devoid of anything resembling charm. It was the case with Sailor Moon, it was the case with Zakuro, it was the case here, and it's been the case with other shows that I've watched briefly. The male band in Show By Rock kinda had the same atmosphere about them, but they had just enough funny skits to give them a shallow redemption.
I want to say that they just feel like the whole focus of their characters (any depth they might have included) is geared towards making the female audience react with "haha, those silly boys", "so cute", and "he's soooo sexy", but that's not really a good explanation as to why they fit that description and why it equates to characters that range from really boring to really obnoxious.

They're made by writers who are clearly more used to writing for the shoujo audience and were taking a swing at something more unisex, though.

I didn't really give enough specifics for it to be drivel. All I gave was tastes and a gut feeling. I know that it's not a good argument, which is why I wish that I could pin it down.
But, I can't really come up with anything that consistently explains what causes it. It's definitely the same set of problems across works, as they all belong to the same dull, lifeless air that makes me not like them, so if it doesn't apply to all of them, that can't be it.
K is another show that I had this problem with, though the female characters in that were shit, too.

Takeo Gouda falls in love with Rinko Yamato.
