God damn this scene was amazing.

Best episode so far.

Is the color autist still in these threads? Because he ruined all discussion before with his horrible nitpicking.

What? I though we're only bitching about the pacing.

Does this cour end at 24 or 25?
>>
>>133542818
26

Then we get a 13ep cour to end the series

39 episodes in total.

Ever since episode 1 there's been this Anon that bitches constantly about how washed the colours are and whatnot.

The break before the final cour will be painful tho. But it'll be worth it if they can keep up the quality of the last few eps
>>

I swear if the show keeps this up I will mark it as 10/10. This episode gave me massive goosebumps.

The translators fucked up by not noting Ushio's name
The anime did so well, but most would miss the whole point of her naming her son 'Ushio'
>>
>>133545470
You'd have to be retarded not to make the connection given how much emphasis the ocean was given in that scene

This is what happens when we adopted the ridiculous rule not to include TN anymore.
>>
>>133546017
It's what happens when anime TLs and Editors think they're translating from an strictly written source like a book or something were rewriting and localizing lines is sometimes necessary.
They also have the notion that anime scripts somehow have to be made to appeal to global audiences rather than the niches that watch it.

Even in books there's often translation notes, precisely because of differences in languages/culture. It's only dumb Anglo normies that whine about TN.

>>133546297
Notes which usually pertain to explaining cultural situations and not the translation itself

Tell me about Hakumen no Mono. Why is he such a clever bitch?
>>
>>133545470
I don't think they actually watch episodes at CR, they just quickly translate the script once they get it because they can't fuck up simulcast. Bet that's where most of their fuck ups came from.

No, many of them do clarify precisely the translation. For example in philosophy books translated into English from, say, German, there are usually at least 10-20 pages prologue that explains key terms and their proper meaning. Some of Kant's books come into mind, if you prefer a really concrete example.

Stop.
>>
Is this some sort of cult anime?
>>
>>133546845
I like 'he' because he's always taking the female form. The gender confusion makes him more inhuman.
>>
>>133546491
Anon, philosophy is on a completely different level of complexity than anime.

>我屬在蒼月胸中至誅白面者
>>
>>133547071
No. It was very popular back when it was being published, but that was in the 90s. It's an old classic.

>>133547165
Complexity doesn't matter. Both are clarifying the way words are used in their native language. Not to mention that's for simple German-English translation. When it comes to Asian languages, proper translation becomes even harder. Have you ever tried reading something like ROTK or any other classic? Usually the text is presented in both English and its native language, side by side.

>>133545601
With that sort of logic, you can argue that they don't need to translate anything. You can have a strong grasp of whatever conversation characters are having based on tones, atmosphere, events etc.
>>
>>133549289
There's a lot you can infer from those things, for sure. But you're grasping at straws here, the most you could infer of that scene without a translation would be that the ghost girl is talking about the ushio dude and that he's like the sea. No fucking way you'd know that that's his mother, or anything plot relevant about her.
>>
>>133549446
>No fucking way you'd know that that's his mother, or anything plot relevant about her.
Actually, that's even easier to tell than his name's origin. The moment she showed up on screen, you know that's his mom for sure, and Ushio's reaction seals the deal.

And the point is that this is a translation, they are suppose to translate shit, and it's not even something that is debatable on its translatability like honorifics. You can't just go, "okay, I assume the viewer knows what I mean, so I won't be clear about it."
>>
>>133549863
Nigger, if you're not tanslating anything, you have to assume you have watched 20 episodes without subs, so anything mother related is pretty much unknown. Because no one knows what KAACHAN means
>>
>>133550023
>Because no one knows what KAACHAN means
And somehow everyone knows what Ushio means. Really, stop dumbing down the viewers to fit your argument when you need it to.
>>
>>133550110
No, but given the context and the visuals, infering Ushio's name meaning is simple enough. No you won't fucking know it literally means "The Tide" but it's easy enough to link it to the ocean and the notion that well, it has the fucking strength to never give up and and never be defeated, because that's a fucking normal thought about the goddamned fucking ocean.
And all thanks to the medium being a visual one, and not just a written line on a piece of paper.
>>
So is Ushio supposed to be the descendant and reincarnation of the person who witnessed the beast spear being made back in China? Or is the person who originally witnessed it modern Ushio traveled back in time.
>>
>>133550277
The latter.
>>
>>133550277
Who's this Ushio you're talking about?

The guy who witnessed everything was Tsung Yue
>>
>>133550233
>No you won't fucking know it literally means "The Tide"
Then it means they need to translate it. Translation shouldn't work by making the viewers make assumptions for not being clear about it. I'm pretty sure your teacher would know what you mean when you type a "u" for "you" on your English paper, but it still wouldn't make it any good to leave it like that.
>>
The feels of that scene is entirely on the name itself as it shows how much the tide means to Sumako as it's the only company for her all these years. So whatever it is, they made a mistake for not putting 'the tide' in the subs. Not everyone would get the imagery even if they just slammed 'the ocean' in the viewers face.

10/10 ep. 20/10 if they subbed the 2nd half perfectly.
>>
>>133545687
I understood that his name meant something related to the ocean and that it was supposed to be poetic. I was really expecting something to explain what the name translates to, because I don't speak Japanese and without that the whole scene is kind of pointless.
>>
>>133551894
Exactly. The emotion of the scene didn't came through. If they'd subbed when the mom says 'ushio' with simply 'the tide' it'd make a whole lot of difference.
>>
>>133550318
I dont know buddy, Tsung Yue and Ushio are pretty alike, maybe they are brothers or something
>>
