Honestly, Gantz was pretty amazing if you stuck to the missions and avoided what happened between those points.
The monsters, the general weaponry and feel, the feeling of OH FUCK. It was all very well done and was bogged down by shitty school and drama segments which couldn't deliver in comparison to having a buddha statue chase you down or having italian angel statues rip your arms off.

Everything after the Oni arc dragged like a bitch. Kurono beating the Oni to death was fucking awesome, and the team at that point had a fantastic dynamic that was lost almost completely after that.
Kato ended up being a drag like before, Reika never took proper command after Kurono left and was just sort of meandering about it, and then Kurono ended up TAE!!!-ing for the rest of the series. I would have liked if Kato and Titty Kei were integrated back into the team under Kurono since it would have been nice for both to watch how much he had gotten everything together, but instead shit just went all over the place.
And yes, Tae was boring as shit. I get it, nice girl and all, but she was a narrative dead weight. Reika at least had some badass second-in-command vive going on that made her much more appealing. Also, tits.

This is probably the most accurate description for the reasons I liked (some) of Gantz.
It was so infuriating. Some of the tension/action/horror would be SO FUCKING HYPE, and then it would just shit all over itself and become absolutely horrible.
But then he would build it up again, make things spooky again, feeling that desperation to live, aaaand shit his pants directly. It was a fucking yo-yo of "amazing" and "horrible".
