What I meant is that from storytelling perspective he seems a very unlikely character to be cast in that sort of leadership role given his personality, tropes, the shit his backstory is referencing, etc.
And unless Kubo just decided to pick the highest level character on the go(which is a distinct possibility, true), there must've been another reason why he gave the leadership stick of Literally Medieval Japan, alongside the job of protecting the Quad-Amputee God of Status Quo(Totally not a reference to the Japanese emperor I swear)to a walking Monzaemon reference.

I disagree, Kyoraku is more or less the best pick. He was Yama's protege and, aside from Unohana and Ukitake, he is the most experienced captain. He is charismatic and easy going making him the perfect mediator among the other captains. He is also ridiculously strong and has a rather lax sense of morality.

No, because I think Yamamoto, after the last Quincy war, deviced a plan in which he choose his two top students: In case of emergency one would take the place of the Spirit King, and the other would take command and defeat the enemy forces.
