Because he had an interesting character, while MC did not. The gay dude had actual stuff going on, he was all genki but actually had this seething jealousy arc over the course of the show. Add to that the totally anti-cliche way that he deals with best girl being into him, and he's got all sorts of depth and stuff going on. Then you've got the fact that the Valentine's Day episode about dude and best girl was easily the best in the series, and I think it's totally apparent why he's so liked. Not liking him "cuz he's a gay ass" is a shitty reason. Yeah, he was pretty fuckin' gay, I'm not gonna lie. But he had real shit going on.
And it's the contrast with MC that really underscores all this. MC was kiiiiinda likable, but it was mostly because of small dialogue bits and less about his overall character. He had soooome interesting character stuff going on with cold-hearted bitch, but his arc of basically accepting himself as a gary stu wasn't super engaging. Really I guess the reason for this is mostly because he's being portrayed as the detective character in detective fiction. These characters often just aren't super interesting because their role is to just be super fucking smart or whatever. It's apparent if you've read any detective fiction (which I can't really recommend). They try to spice this up by making him sort of this reluctant hero, but they do it by just saying he's lazy, which coincidentally is the laziest character trait you can give to an MC in anime. You can see the reasoning behind it. If we make our protagonist flawless then he'll be boring. So we need to spice up his character, give him some kind of defect. How about being lazy? That way all the other characters will have to convince him to do shit all the time, but at the end of the day he'll still do it. Now your character is more relatable without having to actually be flawed. There's no actual depth there, and to make it even worse it's been overdone to the point of cliche.

Not him but Oreki was kinda shitty outside his Chitanda interactions, it's ridiculous that he solved the festival mystery without ever moving his ass, he often just felt like a statue that spouted the answer when convenient. He doesn't learn anything throughout the story other than that he can't deny his feeling for Chitanda. Satoshi at least had personality and real issues, struggling with his obsessiveness which brought him problems with Mayaka and his jealousy towards Oreki, who does everything he wants to do but can't.

I agree with the Oreki bit, but I think that's there's a bit of projecting on the Satoshi part. The bigger part of Satoshi's character isn't the jealousy but the obsessiveness. Satoshi is a Sherlockian, he loves mysteries, he wants to solve them, even if he says that database crap, otherwise he wouldn't have gone all around the festival trying to solve the mystery. The jealousy comes from Oreki effortlessly solving something he obsessed so hard over without ever being able to achieve it.
