Anyone want to talk Kaiji? Just finished the Salvation Games gotta say thats the weakest arc so far.
>>
>>133506186
Nothing smart happened ever since Chang figured out the signaling system with his arm. The rest of it is bullshit.
>>
>>133506599
Seriously the rest of the game was just Kaiji and Kazuyas interpretation until Mitsuyama betrayed his friends like a bitch
>>
>>133506186
Where did you read it?
>>
I haven't read the manga but I finished the anime.

I loved it but the overall thinking was too formulaic for me.

>Kaiji acquires the money to pay off his debts and live a good life
>Does something stupid and loses it
>Rises up even more heroically than the last time

Does it ever end or do you see the same pattern in the manga?
>>
>>133506923
I just read it on kissmanga.
>>
>>133506924
Don't know yet the next arc isn't translated.

Next game is better
>>
>>133506924
Sort of. Kaiji hasn't been in debt for a long time now.

But that formula is the result of Kaiji's flaws as a character. He's addicted to gambling, and his addiction is only getting worse. He's now competing in life or death gambles even though he's not in debt and has no obligation to.
>>
>>133507296
Oh god don't break my heart. Kaiji is moe as fuck, probably my favorite male MC.

MEANWHILE
>>
>>133506984
Retard.
>>
>>133506186
I recently binged that arc. Easily the worst arc, but at least it was very amusing despite being "You're wrong Kazuya, the power of friendship prevails" and "Hehehehehe, watch as they stop their facade, Kaiji" over and over.

It must have been hell for those who followed it. Hopefully One Poker will be a better read once FKMTKrazy translates it.
>>
>>133507505
BUT IT WAS NO GOOD
>>
Salvation Game was really disappointing for how repetitive it was. Half the chapters boiled down to Kaiji and Kazuya just screaming "NO YOU" at each other 20 pages. But I think the conclusion made up for a lot of that. The moment where Kazuya tells Kaiji to put his money where his mouth is is a cool meta-mindfuck. The whole arc up to that moment Kaiji is a spectator along with the reader making it easy for the reader to identify and agree with his point of view. When Kazuya tells Kaiji to pony up for Chang and Mario, forcibly prying him out of spectator's seat I found myself as a reader being dragged along with him. It took me more than a moment to switch gears from "agreeing with Kaiji" mode to "NO DON'T DO IT KAIJI" mode as he thought about whether Mario and Chang's lives had worth to him. It's an unusually subtle thing for Fukumoto to do, especially in a series like Kaiji where shouting and repeating phrases are the height of emotion.

Oh and the twist about Kazuya actually being an aspiring author was funny. Did not see that coming at all.

>>133507296
Technically he was in debt to Kazuya for most of the mahjong game.

>>
>>133507505
wait why would you order your hand if most of it is seethrough. Wouldnt that make guessing the opaque tiles really easy? Like in the pic the 8sticks tile could be a 6, 7 or 8 but not a nine or 5 since then he would place it differently

People who live for nothing other than money are truly unhappy people. They never think "this is enough" and will often neglect everything else in favor of it because money = success in their eyes. As far as they're concerned they're already above everyone else; there's nothing to improve on. Eventually they come to realize being excessively wealthy isn't all that great. There's something they know they're missing but they can't quite put their finger on it. Then they develop fucked up vices to fill that void, like all those kid diddlers in Hollywood.

Are you blind? He has a triplet and a 1-2-3 sequence. He's in tenpai.
>>
>>133523764
He's pretty fucked. Kokushi is hell to recover from, so at this point his hope is mostly to stop Akagi from winning the hand and win himself by ending the hanchan. Except :
>Akagi is in tenpai for 5-sou
>Akagi can kan off the 1-sou anytime he wants and go for any tenpai he wants with the remaining tiles since three kans is a yaku
>>

>>
>>133523990
>Kokushi is hell to recover from

Washizu has bullshit amounts of luck. Although with that amount of draws left it's going to be pretty hard. Especially since Yasuoka can also immediately deal into Akagi's hand with whatever he needs, right?
>>
>>133524040
Where did I state that he cares? I was just listing everything discarding that tile would cost him.
>>
>>133524009
Kaiji is too moe.
>>
>>133524066
Scratch that, I'm retarded. Scoring a ron on Yasuoka wouldn't benefit him now.
>>
Does Kaiji pay off Ishida's debt? I'm near the end of S1 and he has just been shitting the bed left and right.
>>
>>133523888
>Either play it as kan
By not calling kan Washizu is left thinking he can still win.
>discard one
Oh, so you are a literal retard.
>>
>>133524066
No, Akagi has to get a tsumo or a ron off Washizu. That's his only hope to kill him, through direct hits, because even a yakuman won't alleviate his point difference with Washizu.
>>
>>133524066
He'd need 5 tiles minimum to come back to tenpai, and that's for a chitoitsu with no wasted draws.

Wait, I thought you could win with chankan off a closed kan if you have Kokushi. Or is that just a common house rule?
>>
>>133517148
that reminds me so much of the myth of Sisyphus it makes you wonder if it is a statement about Kaiji's existance as a whole
>>
>>133525615
Akagi would've had a 2-5 sou wait if he had kanned the 1 sou and that rule wasn't in effect, now he only has a 5 sou wait.
>>
>>133525615
You can, but I'm not sure if it applies in Washizu mahjong.
>>
>>133525615
I think that only applies to the 13 tile wait kokushi, doesn't it?
>>
>>133525615
It is a house rule, I have no idea if it has been mentioned or not as being allowed.
>>
>>133526302
That situation would be impossible in the first place.
>>
>>133526397
1M-9M-1P-9P-1S-9S-Xia-Pei-Other two winds-Haku-Hatsu-Chun
With that hand you'd be waiting for all of those tiles.
>>
>>133526505
And it would be impossible for another player to form a closed kan with one of them.
>>
>>133526505
How would someone else call a closed kan while someone is in tenpai for a 13-way wait kokushi?
>>
>>133526525
>>133526546
Oh, well you didn't specify that it was impossible in this scenario. Obviously it is. I meant you thought it was impossible generally.

>>
>>133525615
I forgot about that. So, with that, everything in his hand is frozen except that 5-sou. Since Akagi doesn't have a yaku except Chinitsu (that could only potentially become a Honitsu), Washizu's only hope is to have every sou and honor tile accounted for so that Akagi can't make a pair. That's a pretty tall order.

I've found E-Card is best with the following changes: switching sides each turn, having a scoring system making it first to X points, emperor side wins are 1 point, slave side wins are 4 points.
>>
>>133531925
I actually tried it while betting monopoly money (with a min and max bet) where each side had the same amount (zero-sum game) but the plus or minus by the end just wasn't satisfying at all. The edge is obviously on the E side but S can zero it out easily as well. Winning as the slave feels great but losing as the slave and winning as the emperor just feels so unsatisfying.

How close were your games? Because I'd imagine they were fairly close.

I guess it also depends on how seriously the two people playing are taking it. The person I played with wasn't at all so it was like playing against a more random AI rather than someone trying to out-think me.

That's why ear drills are ideal. They make sure people are taking things seriously.

I think the Pei is the tile that has played a significant role in the most hands of Akagi. I can think of 4 right now. I'm not sure if this holds some significance or if fkmt just really likes the tile. The one pin and haku also seem like common tiles for important hands.

>>
>>133526672
He wants to avenge all of the guys who died in that steel beam challenge and while there's some truth to that reason, the main reason is that he's a gambling addict.

Kaiji can only be this huge hotshot in life-or-death gambles, he sucks at everything else in life and I think he knows that to some degree

This, high stakes gambling is the only thing Kaiji has going for him. If his life isn't on the line he can't get anything done.

But his success has nothing to do with the gambling itself. He is a literal genius when it comes to out-cheating cheaters and using rules that should favour his opponents to his own advantage.
