Motion is difficult.
Behaviour is difficult.
A general purpose humanoid robot that can give you a handjob without also functioning as a juicer at the same time will probably exist within your lifetime.
A robot that convincingly acts as a person without preprogrammed behaviour (i.e. not just a fancier Siri) probably won't be, unless some revolutionary discovery in neuroscience occurs.
>>133523988
>A robot that convincingly acts as a person without preprogrammed behaviour (i.e. not just a fancier Siri) probably won't be
How so? If anything our ability to make their processing faster and more complex is better guaranteed than what advancements we can make in materials manufacturing or mechanical improvements.

Processing power isn't the problem, figuring out how the brain works is. I suppose one day we'll have the processing power to do a full chemical simulation of the nervous system (which would basically mean that we don't need to know how the brain works, as long as we reproduce it accurately enough), but making a digital chemical model isn't going to be that easy either, and it would probably be a very inefficient and inflexible way of doing it, so it's questionable as to how practical it would be for robotics.
>>133524673
Why don't we have an anime yet about cute girls working in a laboratory that focuses on building robots?
It seems like a lot of fun.
>>133524621
Surely that's overcomplicating it though? Human interactions and behaviour aren't so complex that they can't be skilfully predicted. If anything making a robot with a brain that can perfectly emulate a human's will be a downgrade of their potential. As long as you can estimate what a person would do most of the time you should be good to go, right? You don't need to make it, just fake it. Add in some saline packs for fake crying and we're good to go, bam, instant robotfu.
If not, well it's just as well. I'm picky about voices so I wouldn't mind a mute robo fuck maid that doesn't have complex or realistic behaviours. Just needs to be the right size, shape, and weight.
>>133524673
>you will never build a cute robot with your cute friends
It's not fair.
>>133524292
>>133518715
Actually robogirls of the future probably won't get rations, they'll just work for money doing jobs that humans don't want to do and buy their own energy.
>>133525025
>allowing robutts to buy their sustenance
Nice try. They can't buy anything if they aren't allowed to have money. All robot wages should belong to their human owner.
>>133524843
>Human interactions and behaviour aren't so complex that they can't be skilfully predicted
Don't watch so much anime, alright?
>>133525147
dats be raysiss wyte boi
>>133525306
It's true. It's not as if the phrase "I knew you were gonna say that" doesn't exist. Most day-to-day encounters with strangers play out as you'd expect. Psychology alone has catalogued and simplified hundreds of behaviour patterns down to a science. The art of creating believable characters that behave like people do has been condensed down into books. Then there's the whole fields of economics, game theory, and sociology which again can objectively quantify, interpret, and predict behaviour on a massive scale. It's something so simple communications majors in marketing know enough about it to effect it.
Now, surely the big brains making robots can apply some of that to making a not totally unrealistic robot that's still pleasant to be around?
>>133525147
But what if you allow your robot to make some money under the condition that 10% of the profits go to you. So your robot finds some jobs, makes some money, and decides to buy other robots to help make some more money, eventually making enough money to buy robots capable of making intelligent decisions on other robots to buy. So now this one robot you own is making you tons of passive income, and you don't have to move a muscle.

>But what if you allow your robot to make some money under the condition that 10% of the profits go to you.
They did that in Chobits. But it'll probably be at the point where people with recreational robots either already have money or the markets for robot hires has already been filled (you don't need a robot cashier for example, in this robot future, a simple kiosk will do). Plus the people with enough money for tons of robots to generate them passive income will probably already be rich to start with, and will either be pimps since that's the only job I can imagine would require realistic humanoid robots by the time we have the technology to make them (anything else can just be done by more simplistic and specialized machines, from farming to construction to service industries).
>>133525723
You have to concider the alternatives though? Would you rather have a realistic miku bot (or whatever you're into) that's a little predictable and maybe not that witty or a real human that's... well a real human.
Who Aiko here?
>>133523283
a) She is a cyborg not an android. An adult should know the difference.
b) There once was a fan theory that Motoko was really a guy in woman's body.
>>133523384
Lots of engineering problems.
Problems that need a lot of cash and man-hours thrown on them to be solved.
>>133525741
Well, lets assume that programs can own money, and that robots are just hardware to run programs on. In that case, even the job of a kiosk will be delegated to programs capable of making money. Also an individual doesn't need to buy tons of robots/programs, it just needs to buy one which buys the rest, and the rest makes money for that one which gives a portion of that money to you. The realistic humanoid robot is just a hardware host for the software that actually owns the money. So even if your moneymaking robowaifu gets lost or stolen, she can buy replacement hardware and redownload a backup of herself to that. And regarding specialized machines, they can be bought by your robowaifu too and make money for your robowaifu by preforming whatever services they're designed to do.

>And it's only a matter of time before she finds it covered in semen. You could just throw it away, but then you'd need another and then another sock would go missing and that's when the robot starts getting suspicious.
Though this does make me wonder if they would sell things like skin-oils for your robot. Robots don't sweat, so you'd need to rub some kind of oil on them so that their socks and clothes would get smelly. Imagine, you could pick out how you wanted your robo-waifu to smell, ranging from New Car to Smelly NEET.

My point is less about the robo-waifu being able to earn and more over have the right to own money, and more that robo-waifus are, in theory, the pinnacle of robot technology. And by the time we're able to achieve them, most of the other positions humans can fill will already be filled by machines, so there won't be any market space for a robo-waifu owner to profit in.

A robo-waifu with enough cash can buy and sell those machines though. And there will be market space as long as there's demand for processing, if absolutely nothing else is available your waifu can lend out spare processor cycles of her brain to whoever wants to crunch data.
Technologies could be great enough for hobbyists to build their own robowaifus off 3D printers, along with open-source AIs, hopefully.

>>133518871
Nice taste.
>>133505242
What is this?
>>133527059
But what is the worst case scenario though? What's the most unpredictable thing a person can do? And what's the most unpredictable thing that can happen? And what's more, how well do we ourselves react to totally unpredictable things? I find real people don't handle the unexpected all that well themselves.
Rather, how would you personally react to someone doing something unpredictable? For instance if you find yourself in a situation where people are suddenly in grief (accident, illness, got a hangnail, whatever) the most common action is to either mimic the emotions people are displaying or to attempt to let them know you have experienced what they have. Being able to read changes in emotion and get small subtleties like when a person is being sarcastic or joking can't be that far out of reach. We already have programs that can rate jokes, politeness of speech, and so on.
Or let's say an emergency arises, what's the most out of the way natural disaster that a robot could have no means of responding to? I can't think of one, ranging from natural disasters to house fires, missing children, master is late, the robot itself being stolen or abused, all of these have pretty simple responses needed.
Another thing is that the robot doesn't need to react to totally abnormal circumstances. It's a machine, it's purposes are largely domestic where things can be easily typified. Even if the robot were suddenly dropped into a war zone it's previous programming and learning are irrelevant by that point.
But without going to extremes, I just can't see it being that big an issue. True, it's easy to fuck with chatbots, and computer programs in general, but we do those things because we're both aware that what we're interacting with is neither human nor are we trying to actively control our behaviour around it. As long as the robot is treated in a manner you'd treat anyone else, it should hold up fairly well.
Or am I still missing something here?

I just don't think it's that far out of reach though. We've had programs that can get some passing grade on a Turing test for decades now. Even a low grade chatterbot can provide better conversation than plenty of people, casually at least. For instance wikipedia describes ELIZA's speech patterns as
>If a keyword is found, a rule that transforms the user's comments is applied, and the resulting sentence is returned. If a keyword is not found, ELIZA responds either with a generic riposte or by repeating one of the earlier comments.
That's not far off from how most people talk to each other. We all have topics that can set us off on rants or tangents if appropriate, and if confronted with something we have no knowledge of we either try to change the subject, give a generic response, or ask asbout it to learn more.
Also long as your chatterbot doesn't repeat itself verbatim given the same input you can raise how natural it is to talk to by a huge margin.
I don't know if we'd be able to make robots that can have deep and witty conversations, but then again we don't really need to imo. But if you want a waifu-bot that can really stimulate you intellectually and emotionally, then I can see why that'd be a concern.
I'm more of a fuck maid kind of guy, personally.

It's not, it's human girls wielding megitek weaponry.
I want a Madoka clone where some robot gets chosen for having magical capacity or some shit.
The anime, set in a cyber-punkish future, begins with an assistant robot getting thrown from her previous owner's house for being useless, only hearing the words "guess robots can't replace humans" before she is shut down. Some time later, she is awakened by a magical creature from another realm who mistakes her for a girl and gives her a wish in return for fighting the universe's enemies.
She (being mechanically broken) asks to know what it is to be human, and before the creature can understand the meaning behind the words, he grants her sentience, and with the anime going forward, she discovers her true emotions.
The anime should also have some suffering and teenagers punks ganking on her for being an android where she is heart-broken and learns true fear for the first time.
