Daily reminder this handsome gundam saved the entire mech genre from dying a slow death

>>
>>133399634
I really hope you commit and post this every day.
>>
>>133399634
No, it killed the genre. Everything since has been trying to capitalize on its success.
>>
>>133399658

People are going to believe whatever they want to as it's convenient and then believe the opposite. I won't be surprised if I wake up one day to see /a/ reinventing history and claiming Seed Destiny is the best mecha anime ever made or something.
>>
>>133399963
maybe that's because they recognize the viewership for the franchise was steadily declining until SEED came out. numbers don't lie, anon.
>>
>>133399963

Mecha anime influences happened in two steps in the 21st century. The first was Seed which started the whole idea of main characters trying not to kill enemy combatants and having pacifistic leanings while also having a friend on the opposite side of the conflict they have to win over. The second is Code Geass which strangely not Sunrise but Aniplex has tried to copy the formula from at least 4 or 5 times now only to fail and have each successive attempt be even less popular than the last while even the Code Geass OVA doesn't really follow the whole Code Geass style and tone per se all the time. Basically every time Sunrise comes out with some sort of trend setter they make off like bandits and then that genre or idea goes to shit as everybody else tries to copy it badly. Have fun with your shitty half baked idol/music anime or vaguely homoerotic superhero bait anime that bankrupts it's spinoff companies for the rest of the decade basically.
>>
>>133400030
And the only mecha shows that have even come close to SEED's popularity were Macross F, Geass, TTGL and 00, two of which are from long running. I can't remember the last time a true mecha series has had an original bone or some sense of freshness to it. And it's sad when the most original and unique mecha anime have been Gundam series.
>>
>>133400292
The majority of mech lovers are no different than moe lovers. They're content watching the same derivative, been there done that stories with shit writing over and over again.
>>
>>133400030

Daily Reminder that Gundam Unicorn managed to sell in the 200K range over 7 parts in almost 5 years, an achievement that will probably never be equaled again. Origin is looking like it's going to be pretty strong as well and I won't be shocked at all when it's announced that it's getting extended to 5 parts the same way Unicorn and Akito the Exiled were. Basically Sunrise and Xebec or sometimes both together if you count Yamato 2199 are the only ones making successful mecha anime right now even if it's just by using established brands and I'm curious to see what happens with Thunderbolt. If it's anything similar to even Origin then that's it U.C OVAs will be an annual thing.
>>
>>133400292
>the only mecha shows that have even come close to SEED's popularity were Macross F, Geass, TTGL and 00
>TTGL

Macross, Geass, and 00 all broke 50k+ compared to SEEDs 86k. TTGL, barely broke 22k, which doesn't "come close" to 86 any way you try to spin it.
>>
>>133400292
I forgot to mention Unicorn.
>>133400411
But Mecha sales are shit outside of the the established franchises. There was once a time when new mecha franchises could make money as well. The problem is that most mecha writers coming up with their mecha series don't have an original bone in them.

It's sort of true in a way. Bandai has become really good at exploiting the shit out of both lately which generally makes me very worried about the future of certain franchises.
>>
>>133400542
>problem is that new mech series don't have an original bone in them
or maybe the problem is the only mech anime that are even close to being good are made by sunrise and all the rest are just really terrible. code geass was a new franchise but it did reasonably well because it didn't completely suck.
>>
>>133400542

You're only looking at the disc sales not the merchandise and multimedia stuff, particularly model kits. Again though outside of Sunrise and maybe by extension Bandai Visual everyone also happens to be fucking the dog when it comes to making mecha anime lately and actually capitalizing on their potential.

The rest of the industry isn't much different when you boil it down. Sunrise riding off the gundam name isn't all that different from another studio just picking the hottest new LN/manga with an established following to adapt. At least with mecha there are still a decent amount of original anime even if the majority of them end up being bad.

No, but there *is* a reason we have different boards. Moe, action, rom com, drama, and cyber (such as GITS) are fine here, but mecha really belong in /m/.

Will a mod please move this thread to either /m/ or /trash/ please?
>>
>>133400648

Is it me or is Sunrise just kind of making the rest of the industry look like a joke lately in general not just mecha anime. It's still hard to think of anything recently they've done that hasn't been a modest sized hit. There's Buddy Complex, Gundam Age obviously though the last thing I can remember before that was Sacred Seven. Even Cross Ange was somehow a hit albeit on the lowest possible end of the scale. They're also just kind of recently returned to making mecha anime after fucking around with idol anime and shit doesn't seem to be going completely south and it's not exactly a good time for mecha series popularity wise.
>>
>>133400711
He probably got laughed out of there already.
>>
>>133400893

I maintain that Gundam Seed is plenty moe and one of the most /a/ Gundam series.
>>
>>133400893
Discussing mecha anime is fine on /a/, or do you go into every Tekketsu thread telling them to take it to /m/ too?

/m/ is where mecha aficionados and generally people with a stronger background in mecha (or toku) can have discussion. /a/ is where the everyman who happens to pick up a mecha anime or two a season can talk about it with like-minded individuals.
>>
>>133400893
SEED is pretty /a/ friendly imo
>>
>>133400893
Gee tripfag, back in 2007 when the gurren lagann crown wouldn't (and still won't) shut up? Or when /a/ became /CODE GEASS/?

Discussing mecha on /a/ has been fine since forever.

It's really kind of the same thing. It's like how guys like fast cars and attractive women if we're talking like base level instincts here.
>>
>>133400893

/m/ is redundant. Hiro should delete that board and move tokushit to /tv/.

Seed is why I dropped Gundam.
Unicorn pulled me back in.

Basically the only mecha anime that do well anymore are Bandai Visuals and King Records same as with how idol anime seems to actually be a no go unless you're one of the two.
>>
>>133401170
let's be honest. SEED didn't make you drop gundam. You just couldn't find anything up to SEED's standards until Unicorn came out.

A story for the bored:

>It was 2002/2003, downloaded and completed watching the Zeta and 8th MS series.
>G Gundam was playing on Cartoon Network around that time too.
>Heard about the new Seed series and that subs were coming out (it took some time for subs back then).
>I was hyped and went to search for it (on Kazaa Lite or some shit I don't remember).
>What I remember is watching the first couple of episodes and felt underwhelmed or bored, then dropped it.

I don't remember why but I think it was the artistic style change of the characters and the story didn't appeal to me.

Afterward, I heard 00 and some other series came out didn't keep up with anime for a couple years in the late 00's. I did eventually watch one of them a couple years ago but I haven't been interested in watching a Gundam series until Unicorn, then I watched Try Fighters which was pretty entertaining as well. I might try to rewatch Seed now, I think I'm more opened to watching "new" things nowadays and nostalgia.

For a lot of people SEED was their first mecha anime ever. I think SEED is a very good introductory mecha anime but beyond that it's probably not that good.
